The proposed exploitation of the Jadar Valley lithium/borate deposit in Serbia, by Rio Tinto Corporation, indicates that it would become large-scale processing boron- and lithium-containing ore. It be one world's very first lithium mines populated agricultural area. company claims envisioned mining will accordance with environmental protection requirements. deposits have been claimed to cover 90% Europe's current needs. Yet, local opposition has arisen due potential devastating impacts on groundwater, soil, water usage, biodiversity loss, waste accumulation. Research drilling already produced damage, mine containing high levels boron leaking from exploratory wells causing crops dry out. Furthermore, our investigations reveal substantially elevated downstream concentrations boron, arsenic, nearby rivers as compared upstream regions. Additionally, here we show soil samples exhibit repeated breaches remediation limit values consequences both surface underground waters. With opening mine, problems multiplied tailings pond, wastewater, noise, air pollution, light endangering lives numerous communities destroying their freshwater sources, land, livestock, assets.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a key technology for seawater desalination, but boron removal remains challenging due to the relatively low and varying rejection of RO membranes. This study explored use machine learning (ML) develop predictive models Data 11 features encompassing membrane properties, testing conditions performance were collected from journal articles. Missing data recovered using imputation algorithms. The developed five regression algorithms: linear, ridge, Decision Tree, Random Forest XGB regressors, tree-based regressor performed best (R2 = 0.84). Feature importance analysis tree diagrams revealed that type, feed pH NaCl as factors in influencing rejection, while properties like surface charge roughness had minimal impact. Partial dependence plots generated further analyze each feature. A high >99.6 % highly desirable SWRO For BWRO membranes at >9, looser structure with >95 could be applied. successfully applied ML dataset large portion missing values, results provide valuable insights future design processes.

The services provided from biodiversity and ecosystems are endangered by the various activities carried out human. Among them, mining agricultural have contributed to loss of deterioration ecosystems, however damage generated is overshadowed economic benefits it brings. Thus, objective this study was compile scientific literature that helps determine way in which these harm as well negative effects they trigger between them. To do this, original review articles Web science, Scopus Scielo databases were used. findings show there contamination with heavy metals, a product use agrochemicals activity. However, externalities unidirectional manner, production being subject caused mining.

This study investigates the distribution and mobility of metals metalloids (M&Ms) in soils, rocks, groundwater within geologically complex southwestern region Sicily. The aims to highlight how natural sources, like rocks can release elements potentially harmful human health. It underlines their dual role as both reservoirs active sources M&M release, driven by leaching processes influenced physicochemical factors such pH redox potential (Eh). Lithological characteristics significantly influence retention elements, with clay-rich formations exhibiting higher immobilization capacity. However, environmental parameter variations enhance element mobilization, increasing bioavailability risk contamination. Water quality analyses reveal regulatory exceedances for As, B, Ni, Be, underscoring health ecological risks. Concurrently, microbiological investigations identify diverse microbial communities capable altering oxidative states specific through oxidation reduction processes, further influencing mobility. underscores importance understanding M&Ms interactions geochemical effective assessment. findings provide a foundation developing integrated sustainable water resource management strategies mitigate contamination risks safeguard ecosystems public
