There is increasing interest in perennial crops to build soil carbon (C) agricultural production systems, but the mechanisms underlying C accrual croplands remain unclear. Research that directly tracks intra-annual fluxes through crop-microbial-soil pools necessary evaluate capacity of over intra-decadal time periods. We conducted a 13C isotope-tracer study compare within-season uptake and partitioning patterns between 1-year-old (IWG-1) 2-year-old (IWG-2) novel grain crop, intermediate wheatgrass (IWG; Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth Dewey). compared these an annual spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Crop shoots, roots, soil, respired-C were sampled ten times 90-day chase period. also measured incorporation recently assimilated into microbial biomass (13C PLFA) functional groups first 7 days post-label application. Global food production relies on annual grain crops. The reliability and productivity of these crops are threatened by adaptations to climate change unsustainable rates soil loss associated with their cultivation. Abstract Continuous land disturbance could negatively impact microbial community, but perennial crops can potentially reverse this negativity. The objective of study was to evaluate the effects Kernza ( Thinopyrum intermedium ) and alfalfa Medicago sativa L.) on soil structure stress condition using phospholipid fatty acid profiling. conducted at Ross Jones Research Farm, University Missouri consisted four treatments: fertilized, unfertilized, intercrop, monocrop with replications. Treatments were established in September 2021 18.3 m × plots. Soils from 0‐ 5‐cm 5‐ 15‐cm depths sampled (before treatments placed) 2022 analyzed for communities. All communities increased after 1 year crops. Since differences not significant among 2022, may lead positive impacts communities, irrespective crop species management. Moreover, community modifications also observed crops, management, as evidenced changes bacterial indices 2022. While fungi/bacteria ratio increased, Gram‐positive/Gram‐negative bacteria decreased suggesting a reduction stress, which be attributed ecological functions showed improvements biomass alfalfa. As system matures, relative benefits management (fertilization intercropping) plant realized.

Prairie cordgrass (PCG) is a perennial crop which has the potential for biofuel production under marginal lands. The intercropping of legume, kura clover (KC) with PCG can reduce use chemical fertilizer while maintaining soil hydro-physical conditions. objective this study was to compare properties and greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes intercropped KC (PCG–KC), fertilized graded levels N (0, 75, 150, 225 kg ha −1 ). During summer 2021, samples (0–10 cm) were collected. Additionally, collected weekly from April through September same year. Soil water retention, saturated hydraulic conductivity ( K sat ), thermal (λ), organic carbon (SOC), total (TN) concentrations measured. pore characteristics measured using X-ray computed tomography. PCG–KC had 1.42 g TN 24 SOC at 0–10 cm, non-significant PCG-75, N. Nonetheless, significantly increased in both other treatments compared control. Intercropping boosted macroporosity (0.024 cm 3 −3 (+50%), lowered λ (−1%), treatments. cumulative CO 2 (1012.67 C ) similar 150 N, but lower than PCG-225 (1418.66 Overall, showed that be sustainable option over fertilizers since they comparable ability mitigate GHG emissions.

Agriculture has generally committed enhancing soil health, with oilseeds offering potentially non-animal-related alternatives our current choices.
