Abstract. Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) are key components of the atmosphere, playing a significant role in formation aerosols (OAs). However, only few studies have simultaneously examined characteristics BVOCs and OAs forest ecosystems on background environmental stressors, such as consecutive droughts extensive bark beetle infestations. Here, we present real-time measurements stressed spruce-dominated near biogas power plant (BPP) western Germany during June 2020. A proton-transfer-reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometer coupled with particle inlet (CHARON-PTR-ToF-MS) Vocus-PTR-ToF-MS were used to measure BVOCs. The average OA concentration was 0.8 ± 0.5 µg m−3, consisting mainly semi-volatile monoterpene oxidation products. mixing ratios isoprene (0.58 0.54 ppb) monoterpenes (2.5 5.3 higher than values previously measured both German temperate forests boreal forests. Based wind direction analysis, BVOC data categorized into two groups: one influenced by biogenic emissions from an intact clear-cut area (referred group) other anthropogenic BPP village group). High observed group, indicating contribution emissions. In variations driven interplay between meteorology, their photochemical consumption. Positive matrix factorization analysis VOCs revealed substantial contributions oxygenated daytime, while weakly oxidized products dominated at night. Furthermore, increasing relative humidity decreasing temperatures promoted gas-to-particle partitioning these products, leading increase nighttime mass. results demonstrate that not meteorological conditions but also local subsequent chemical transformation processes. This study highlights need investigate changes European

Although atmospheric organic pollutants have been extensively studied to elucidate summertime urban photochemical air pollution, uncertainties remain concerning the quality of wintertime in large northern North American cities. Here, we used online mass spectrometric measurements volatile compounds (VOCs) and aerosol (OA), combined with positive matrix factorization (PMF), identify sources downtown Toronto, Canada during February–March 2023. In some cases, comparable PMF factors were identified for both VOCs OA, such as from traffic, cooking, background oxygenated sources. However, VOC yielded additional information, a factor associated human-related emissions VOCs. Additionally, yields two traffic factors: one likely related gasoline diesel use. Despite cold relatively dark conditions, OA grow intensity daytime, indicative activity, whereas cooking enhanced morning late evening due timing vehicle use, boundary layer effects. This study illustrates benefits that arise parallel source–receptor analyses gases particles.

Sustainable use of biomass energy sources can reduce dependency on fossil fuels. Wood is the primary source for heating in Slovenia, with firewood and wood pellets having highest share. Slovenia’s largest consumers fuels are households primarily using from their forests or imported pellets. This research used a life cycle assessment to analyze evaluate environmental impacts household Slovenia first time. The results showed that logs have considerably greater effect stratospheric ozone depletion, formation, fine particulate matter (PM) formation. impact global warming was lower due short transportation distances log boilers high combustion efficiency (0.016 0.041 kg CO2 eq pellet combustion, respectively). An increase distance 100 km 1000 resulted an 84.9% values categories formation human health, 120.4% resource scarcity, 102.4% warming, supporting premise distribution routes necessary more sustainable source.

To study the spatiotemporal variability of particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and assess their carcinogenic potential in six contrasting urban environments Greece, a total 305 filter samples were collected analyzed. Sampling sites included variety background, traffic (Athens, Ioannina Heraklion), rural (Xanthi) near-port locations (Piraeus Volos). When considering sum 16 U.S. EPA priority PAHs, as well that EU-proposed members, average concentrations observed across during summer varied moderately (0.4–2.2 ng m−3) independently population each site, with highest values areas Piraeus Volos are affected by port industrial activities. Winter levels significantly higher more spatially variable compared to summer, seasonal enhancement ranging from 7 times 98 Ioannina, indicating large impact PAH emissions residential wood burning. Regarding benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), an IARC Group 1 carcinogen only EU-regulated PAH, winter/summer ratios 24–33 Athens, Volos, Heraklion Xanthi; 60 Piraeus; 480 which is afflicted severe wood-burning pollution events. An excellent correlation was between organic carbon (OC) (BaP) cold period at all (r2 > 0.8) stable BaP/OC slopes (0.09–0.14 × 10−3), highlighting use OC proxy for estimation BaP winter conditions. The identified contrasts, explored first time PAHs such scale Eastern Mediterranean, provide important insights into sources controlling atmospheric conditions reveal deviations exposure risks among cities raise issue environmental injustice on national level.

In this study, an intumescent fire retardant (IFR) bioadditive was designed based on a commercial Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast protein matrix. Lignosulfonate used as cohesive reinforcement of its polymeric structure, along with magnesium hydroxide Mg(OH)2, agents that enhance the binder-intumescent properties, aim improving thermal stability and resistance PVAc adhesive. Firstly, two formulations were elaborated characterized for their physicochemical electrical dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), adherence properties (shear strength), resistance, to modify Thus, it found IFR formulation higher percentage Mg(OH)2 more thermally stable than other one, although both them able adhesive PVAc. Then, ten blends modified these different bioadditives added in proportions, including shear test (dry, elevated temperature, three-cycle conditions) delamination. Based results, five selected, we performed following tests: penetration, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), morphological elemental by scanning electron microscope (SEM/EDS). From blends, samples which improve high temperature performance

Using satellite ground-based data, this analyzed seasonal trends, daily fluctuations, influence COVID-19 lockdown measures quality. Our findings reveal a persistent increase levels, particularly during winter, with frequently exceeding WHO guidelines. analysis suggests significant correlations between conditions concentration, highlighting role conditions, such as rainfall, humidity, temperature, modulating levels. found that levels exhibited inverse correlation relative humidity (r = −0.72), rainfall −0.69), temperatures −0.79), mitigating pollution Additionally, underscores temporary improvements quality periods, demonstrating potential benefits sustained emission control measures. The research emphasizes need for comprehensive multi-faceted management strategies, including stringent vehicular industrial emissions regulations, enhancement urban green spaces, public awareness campaigns mitigate adverse health impacts Dhaka.
