Abstract Wastewater treatment plants are the major energy consumers and significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions, among which biological nitrogen removal wastewater is an important contributor to carbon emissions. However, traditional heterotrophic denitrification still has problems excessive residual sludge requirement external sources. Consequently, development innovative low-carbon nitrate technologies necessary. This review outlines key roles sulfur autotrophic hydrogen in treatment. The discovered nitrate/nitrite dependent anaerobic methane oxidation enables sustainable emission reduction by utilizing available situ . Photosynthetic microorganisms exhibited a promising potential achieve carbon-negative removal. Specifically, algal-bacterial symbiosis system photogranules offer effective prospective options for Then, emerging technology photoelectrotrophic underlying photoelectron transfer mechanisms discussed. Finally, we summarize prospect these technologies, highlighting that solar-driven area future guiding significance design systems.

Chemicals are commonly dosed in sewer systems to reduce the emission of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methane (CH4), incurring high costs environmental concerns. Nitrite dosing is a promising approach as nitrite can be produced from urine wastewater, which feasible integrated water management strategy. However, usually requires strict conditions, e.g., relatively concentration (e.g., ∼200 mg N/L) acidic environment, inhibit microorganisms. In contrast "microbial inhibition", this study proposes utilization" concept, i.e., utilizing substrate for H2S CH4 consumption sewer. laboratory-scale reactor, at low concentrations 25–48 N/L was continuously dosed. Two nitrite-dependent microbial utilization processes, anaerobic oxidation (n-DAMO) oxidation, successfully occurred conjunction with reduction. The occurrence both processes achieved 58 % reduction dissolved over 90 removal activities measured 15.6 CH4/(L·h) 29.4 S/(L·h), respectively. High copy numbers n-DAMO bacteria sulfide-oxidizing (SOB) were detected biofilms sediments. Mechanism analysis confirmed that level did not cause inhibition sulfidogenic process due downward migration activity zones Therefore, proposed concept offers new alternative simultaneous sewers.

The environmental impacts from energy consumption account for a high percentage of the wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) throughout their life cycle; therefore, controlling use in WWTPs could bring substantial benefits to environment. In this study, according different percentages electricity generation renewable compared fossil energy, global warming, acidification, eutrophication, human toxicity, and photochemical smog, WWTP operation were considered. Furthermore, explore more sustainable way operating under “dual-carbon” strategic decision, utilization efficiency power allocation scenarios at present next 40 years based on LCA+DEA integrated model. study revealed that 1–5, as proportion gradually increased, all LCA results showed gradual decrease, which GWP decreased by 83.32% toxicity 93.34%. However, 2–5, contribution ratio (proportion) gas POCP reaching 77.11% 59.44%, respectively, scenario 5. biomass AP EP increased well, 65.22% 68.75%, Meanwhile, combined technical five decreasing trend; only 1 was fully efficient, 1. values 2, 3, 4, 5 0.7386, 0.4771, 0.2967, 0.1673, respectively. This discusses whether place elicits an impact WWTPs. We feasibility achieving savings emission reductions within Tumen River Basin, provide theoretical basis development.
