Abstract One of the challenges sustainable horticulture is to preserve soil quality (SQ) by reducing intensity tillage operations and adopting practices that maintain organic matter (SOM). Relationships between best management practices, SOM fractions health in conventional vegetable production systems (VPS) are still unclear. This study aimed evaluate relationships biological indicators SQ, looking for potential impacts (BMP) VPS. Ninety samples were collected at 0–10 cm depth (48 42 systems) from 53 producing areas Federal District, Brazil. The adoption level each BMP was assessed assigning scores ranging 1 10. Total carbon determined dry combustion (SOC DC ), Walkley‐Black method WB particulate (POC), potassium permanganate oxidizable (POX‐C), mineral‐associated (MOC), fulvic acids (FA) humic (HA), humin (HU), F1, F2, F3, F4, β‐glucosidase (GLU) Arylsulfatase (ARYL) activity determined. In field, farmers answered a semi‐structured questionnaire relating adopted ARYL levels, labile stable higher than ones, except F3. showed moderate strong correlations with POC, POX‐C, HA, HU, SOC , while GLU correlated moderately only POC FA. According principal component analysis, most differentiated VPS ARYL. PCA, no clear effect time on properties observed. Organic can serve as reference search SQ they good SQ.

In Gannan navel orange (Citrus sinensis) orchards—a typical sloped farmland ecosystem—selected native grasses outperform conventional green manure due to their stronger ecological adaptability and lower management requirements. However, few studies have investigated how enhance soil organic carbon nitrogen contents at the aggregate level. A 5-year field study was carried out analyze impacts of practice on accumulation physicochemical properties microbial communities aggregates in orchards. Three treatments were tested: (i) clean tillage (CK); (ii) intercropping Centella asiatica (L.) Urban (CA); (iii) Stellaria media Cvr. (SM). Our work found that, compared CK, physical improved under long-term grasses, content nutrients increased. The SOC (+118.3–184.2%) total (TN) (+73.3–81.5%) changed significantly. proportion macro-aggregates stability increased, TN addition, community diversity beneficial microbes abundance functional genes related cycling increased significantly aggregates. Native by increasing microorganisms, altering structure, for nutrient cycling, thereby enhancing sequestration topsoil. results will provide a theoretical basis enhancement fertilization as orchards popularization application.

Coastal saline–alkali soils, characterized by poor structures and low fertility, limit sustainable agricultural development. This study aimed to investigate how green manure application influence soil aggregate stability organic carbon (SOC) sequestration in such coastal saline soils. Field experiments were conducted comparing the following five treatments: (1) control (CK); (2) ryegrass full incorporation (RF); (3) mulching (RM); (4) alfalfa (AF); (5) (AM). The results demonstrated that significantly increased large macroaggregate (>2 mm) proportions 20.60–56.70% while reducing microaggregates (<0.25 24.35–68.43%. SOC across 0–40 cm depth, primarily driven macroaggregates microaggregates, which contributed 23.7–73.5% 34.8–91.4% of total increase, respectively. Mulching treatments (AM/RM) surface sequestration, full-incorporation practices (AF/RF) boosted subsoil stocks. These highlight as an effective strategy rehabilitate soils enhancing providing technical guidance for rehabilitation regions.

Abstract As a crucial strategy for sustainable agricultural production, green manure–crop rotation can regulate soil nutrient cycling and decrease the reliance on nitrogen fertilizers. However, we still lack comprehensive understanding of changes in eco-enzyme activities, microbial metabolism limitations caused by leguminous rotation. Here, conducted field experiments across China to analyze extracellular enzyme specifically β-glucosidase (BG), N-acetyl-β-d-glucosaminidase (NAG), leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) acid phosphatase (AP). The study revealed that long-term increased carbon accumulation farmland, with significant average increase 20.1% 36.4% BG, AP activities topsoil, while showing ln(NAG + LAP):ln(AP) ratios. ratios ln(BG):ln(NAG LAP) various regions were typically below 1:1, indicating activity is more constrained phosphorus nutrients rather than carbon. Precipitation, temperature, total (TC) (TN) identified as key environmental factors stoichiometric Our highlights alleviates limitation enhancing limitation, closely related TC TN soil.

Studying green manure in several returning methods to enhance soil fertility and crop benefits is a strong foundation for cropland nutrient management. However, how different types of manures their variable doses affect the efficacy applied manures, either buried or mulched, remain overlooked. The objective this study was optimize management maize biomass using five (white mustard, forest rye, fiddleneck, sufflower, pea) two (low, 5 g per pot, high, 10 pot), which were mulched before after sowing. Results revealed that total carbon content increased due treatments, representing 10% increase over control, particularly through w. mustard (10% cultivation) safflower pea (12% 11% cultivation control). Dry aboveground yields also improved across all variants, with yielding 18.4 g·plant−1 (compared 8.6 control), 16.4 g·plant−1, 17.8 g·plant−1. Green mulching generally acidified (pH 5.71 compared 6.21 except fiddleneck 6.39 at high dose manures. Carbon-mineralizing enzyme activities (dehydrogenase β-glucosidase) significantly by showing 22.6% 20.6% 24.5% 22.4% under doses. suggests partially decomposed mineralized may induce negative priming effect on carbon-mineralizing enzymes decrease C/N ratio soil. It emphasizes stoichiometry alongside characteristics such as ratio, are critical factors sustainable sequestration. These findings underscore need careful selection health carbon-storage outcomes.
