Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are increasingly detected in wildlife present concerning unknown health risks. While there is a growing body of literature describing PFAS seabird species, knowledge from temperate Southern Hemisphere regions lacking. Little penguins (Eudyptula minor) can nest forage within heavily urbanised coastal environments hence may be at risk exposure to pollutants. We analysed scat contaminated nesting soils (n = 50) 17 colonies lutruwita/Tasmania for 16 PFAS, plasma samples 45) nine colonies, three eggs 49 PFAS. 14 across the sample types with perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) perfluorohexanesulfonic (PFHxS) most commonly detected. Mean concentration PFOS was 2.56 ± 4.3 ng/mL (

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have become a well-known class of anthropogenic pollutants in coastal regions. It is known that PFAS primarily enter the sea from nearshore sources, dry deposition, wet deposition. However, contribution offshore sources to pollution remains poorly understood. Our study aims investigate occurrence 74 across 15 groups region eastern China characterize their spatial distribution by focusing on critical roles both sources. Results revealed 26 were detected (i.e., Ou River Wenzhou Bay), with detection frequencies ranging 4.3% 100.0%. Notably, over 10 for first time region, such as perfluorooctane sulfonamide (FOSA), hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA), 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic (6:2 FTSA), among others. The concentrations ranged 0.0018 76.31 ng/L, perfluorooctanoic (PFOA) dominant congener. Spatial analysis indicated area was more severely polluted compared area, specific hotspots identified near industrialized areas. certain PFAS, perfluorobutane (PFBS) perfluoro-3,6-dioxaheptanoic (PFDHA), exhibited contrasting pattern, higher observed island perimeters. These findings suggest Bay originates highlighting complex interplay between island-related activities.

Abstract The platypus ( Ornithorhynchus anatinus ) is a semi-aquatic monotreme that occupies high trophic position in the freshwater ecosystems of eastern mainland Australia and Tasmania. Platypuses are continuously exposed to anthropogenic contaminants including perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). This study examined PFOS concentrations livers deceased platypuses (eight wild; one captive) were opportunistically collected across NSW over two- half-year period. There was large variation concentrations, ranging from < 1 µg/kg 1200 µg/kg. presents first report contamination platypuses, revealing their levels broadly similar those found river otters Lutra canadensis lower than American mink Mustela vison), both which occupy ecological niches systems. raises concerns about impact on health.

The fate and distribution of environmental contaminants includes bioaccumulation within marine organisms. A deceased 4-m long adult female bluntnose sixgill shark, pregnant with 72 pups, was recovered from Coles Bay on Vancouver Island, BC, Canada in 2019. This specimen provided a unique opportunity to examine maternal transfer yolk-sac viviparous shark species. Liver subsamples the offspring were analyzed for 18 targeted inorganic elements by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) 21 perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-Orbitrap MS). maternal-offspring efficiencies liver tissue subsequently examined both contaminant classes. Concentrations all detectable metals apart calcium magnesium found be higher mother compared offspring, including substantial levels toxic cadmium (6 ± 2 mg kg
