Birds as Bioindicators: Revealing the Widespread Impact of Microplastics

The
global
crisis
of
plastic
pollution,
particularly
involving
microplastics
(MPs)
and
nanoplastics
(NPs),
has
profound
ecological
implications.
Birds,
serving
as
bioindicators,
are
especially
susceptible
to
these
pollutants.
This
systematic
review
synthesizes
the
current
research
on
presence,
distribution,
impact
MPs
NPs
avian
species,
alongside
advancements
in
detection
methodologies.
have
been
identified
over
200
bird
species
across
46
families,
encompassing
several
ecosystems,
from
Antarctica
Labrador,
including
Australia,
China,
South
Europe.
Seabirds
such
penguins,
gulls,
shearwaters
exhibit
a
high
burden
tissues
feces
due
fishing
debris,
while
terrestrial
face
contamination
urban
agricultural
sources.
Depending
their
composition,
can
cause
gastrointestinal
damage,
oxidative
stress,
bioaccumulation
toxic
chemicals,
polyethylene
polypropylene.
However,
challenges
persist
methodological
inconsistencies,
though
advances
spectroscopy
flow
cytometry
offer
improved
accuracy.
Addressing
this
pollution
is
vital
for
conservation
ecosystem
health,
requiring
international
collaboration
standardized
protocols.

ABSTRACT
Sexual
dimorphism
defines
frigatebird
(Fregatidae)
courtship,
with
males
inflating
bright
red
gular
pouches
to
attract
mates.
We
document
rare
cases
of
female
pouch
inflation
in
Lesser
(
Fregata
ariel
)
and
Christmas
Island
Frigatebirds
F.
andrewsi
).
This
previously
undocumented
behavior
likely
does
not
serve
an
adaptive
function
but
may
reflect
physiological
anomalies
(hyperandrogenism)
or
endocrine‐disrupting
chemicals,
warranting
further
investigation.

Plastic
ingestion
greatly
affects
waterbirds,

Polybrominated
diphenyl
ethers
(PBDEs),
used
as
flame
retardants
in
plastics,
remain
persistent
the
environment
despite
restrictions,
along
with
less
studied
methoxylated
PBDEs
(MeO-BDEs),
that
may
result
their
transformation.
Since
most
plastic
pollution
heavily
impacted
marine
comes
terrestrial
sources,
freshwater/estuarine
coastal
environments
can
also
be
exposed
contamination.
Nonetheless,
research
these
areas
remains
limited.
We

waterbird

Formosa
(Algarve,
Portugal)

contamination
sampled
wader
species
feeding
mudflats
saltpans,

terns
lagoon
channels
adjacent
sea,
opportunistic
gulls
mostly
on
fishery
discards
landfills
foraging
exclusively
at
sea.
Specifically,
we
assessed
1)
ingestion,
through
analysis
regurgitations
faeces,
2)
MeO-BDES
uptake
eggs,
feathers,
preen
oil.
Results
showed
that,
overall,
microplastics
were
commonly
detected
particles.
Yellow-legged
(Larus
michahellis)
(Sternula
albifrons)
ingested
more
particles,
especially
fibres.
Eggs
black-winged
stilt
(Himantopus
himantopus)
yellow-legged
gull
had
higher
concentrations,
while
MeO-BDEs
did
not
differ
among
species.
Feathers
exhibited
low
detection
values,
but
suggests
invertebrates'
consumption.
Little
accumulated
MeO-BDEs,
suggesting
an
association
between
load.
However,
species-specific
traits,
dietary
preferences,
should
taken
into
consideration.

Several
food
groups
have
been
reported
to
contain
varying
concentrations
of
plastics.

study
was
designed
quantitatively
investigate

time

Australia

chicken
