Several food groups have been reported to contain varying concentrations of plastics. This study was designed quantitatively investigate for the first time in Australia presence plastics store-bought chicken eggs. Three commonly consumed brands free-range, free-range organic, barn-laid and backyard (home-laid) egg samples were analyzed seven common polymers (i.e., polypropylene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, poly-(methylmethacrylate) polycarbonate). Samples extracted by enzyme digestion pressurized liquid extraction, followed quantitative analysis through double-shot microfurnace pyrolysis coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. No detected at > limit detection (LOD) (from 0.04 μg/g PS 0.22 PVC) analyzed, regardless brand category, suggesting limited exposure Australians from consuming eggs provides valuable baseline data underscores importance continued monitoring ensure safety integrity supplies face rising environmental plastic pollution.

The global crisis of plastic pollution, particularly involving microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs), has profound ecological implications. Birds, serving as bioindicators, are especially susceptible to these pollutants. This systematic review synthesizes the current research on presence, distribution, impact MPs NPs avian species, alongside advancements in detection methodologies. have been identified over 200 bird species across 46 families, encompassing several ecosystems, from Antarctica Labrador, including Australia, China, South Europe. Seabirds such penguins, gulls, shearwaters exhibit a high burden tissues feces due fishing debris, while terrestrial face contamination urban agricultural sources. Depending their composition, can cause gastrointestinal damage, oxidative stress, bioaccumulation toxic chemicals, polyethylene polypropylene. However, challenges persist methodological inconsistencies, though advances spectroscopy flow cytometry offer improved accuracy. Addressing this pollution is vital for conservation ecosystem health, requiring international collaboration standardized protocols.

ABSTRACT Sexual dimorphism defines frigatebird (Fregatidae) courtship, with males inflating bright red gular pouches to attract mates. We document rare cases of female pouch inflation in Lesser ( Fregata ariel ) and Christmas Island Frigatebirds F. andrewsi ). This previously undocumented behavior likely does not serve an adaptive function but may reflect physiological anomalies (hyperandrogenism) or endocrine‐disrupting chemicals, warranting further investigation.

Plastic ingestion greatly affects waterbirds, causing lacerations and potentially leading to health disruptions from chemical leaching. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), used as flame retardants in plastics, remain persistent the environment despite restrictions, along with less studied methoxylated PBDEs (MeO-BDEs), that may result their transformation. Since most plastic pollution heavily impacted marine comes terrestrial sources, freshwater/estuarine coastal environments can also be exposed contamination. Nonetheless, research these areas remains limited. We breeding waterbird community Ria Formosa (Algarve, Portugal) a proxy of such contamination sampled wader species feeding mudflats saltpans, little terns lagoon channels adjacent sea, opportunistic gulls mostly on fishery discards landfills foraging exclusively at sea. Specifically, we assessed 1) ingestion, through analysis regurgitations faeces, 2) MeO-BDES uptake eggs, feathers, preen oil. Results showed that, overall, microplastics were commonly detected particles. Yellow-legged (Larus michahellis) (Sternula albifrons) ingested more particles, especially fibres. Eggs black-winged stilt (Himantopus himantopus) yellow-legged gull had higher concentrations, while MeO-BDEs did not differ among species. Feathers exhibited low detection values, but suggests invertebrates' consumption. Little accumulated MeO-BDEs, suggesting an association between load. However, species-specific traits, dietary preferences, should taken into consideration.

Water scarcity in arid regions is a significant factor constraining industrial development globally. Xinjiang, which has huge potential for economic development, constrained its local industry owing to the of water resources. Enhancing efficiency consumption thus crucial alleviate conflict between resource constrain and development. This study investigated zone northern slope Tianshan Mountains (EZNSTM) Xinjiang from 2001 2020. The super-efficient SBM Tobit model were used identify key drivers regional efficiency. Factors including government influence, structure, urbanization levels found affect overall On contrary, being open outside world natural endowment did not significantly impact paper identified disparities use across different EZNSTM elucidated primary factors influencing area, provided critical foundation coordinating future utilization.

The presence of plastic debris and organo-brominated compounds in the marine environment poses a concern to wildlife. Plastic can absorb release chemical compounds, making their ingestion potentially harmful, while have become omnipresent, with tendency bioaccumulate food web. Seabirds are often used as indicators pollution, yet studies on exposure tropical communities contamination still scarce. In this study we monitored amounts plastics faeces ingested/assimilated feathers by adults chicks Cape Verde shearwaters Bulwer's petrels from Cabo Verde. Anthropogenic pollutants, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), naturally generated methoxylated-PBDEs (MeO-PBDEs) were among probed compounds. frequency was similar both species' chicks, although, characteristics ingested differed. Frequency number microplastics increased throughout nestling season for species. All species age groups showed PBDEs MeO-PBDEs. Among PBDEs, exhibited higher concentrations than shearwaters, had concentration profiles adults. Specifically, petrel shearwater chicks. On contrary, occurrence MeO-PBDEs when compared We found no effect loadings or organohalogen contaminants body condition size, although harmful effects may be hidden reveal themselves medium- long-term. Feather samples shown useful comparing intraspecific levels appear suitable long-term assessment seabirds.
