The black soldier fly larva, Hermetia illucens, can efficiently convert organic waste into biomatter for use in animal feed. This circularity comes with a risk of contaminating downstream consumers the larval products microbes, heavy metals, and other hazards potentially present initial substrate. review examines research on mitigation techniques to manage these contaminants, from pretreatment substrate post-treatment larvae. While much has been done such techniques, little it focused their effects food safety contaminants. Cheap low-technology heat treatment reduce microbial load. Emptying gut through starvation is understudied but promising. Black larvae accumulate certain metals like cadmium, ability process unknown, which why some government authorities are erring side caution regarding how bioconversion be used within feed production. Different substrates have different risks strategies may affect rearing performance final negatively, so producers will need choose right strategy system balance cost-effectiveness sustainability safety.

This study assessed the bioconversion efficiency of Hermetia illucens larvae (BSFL) fed on food waste stored under different conditions, focusing nutritional and microbial quality resulting larval biomass. Food was prepared as a fresh diet (FD) or naturally contaminated at 20–22 °C (OS-T, opened storage-tempered) refrigeration, 5–8 (CS-C, closed storage-cooled). Refrigerated, storage (CS-C) led to highest rates reduction (91.0%) (30.2%), with exhibiting protein content (36.83%) compared FD (35.5%) OS-T (34.71%) groups. Microbiome analysis revealed that CS-C condition promoted beneficial yeasts like Pichia Diutia, which correlated positively improved safety. In contrast, supported spoilage fungi (Mucor, Rhizopus) elevated total aerobic counts (7.28 log CFU/g), indicating higher risks. The observed trends in most probably relate differences profiles, controlled cooling affected dynamics, preserving substrate supporting growth. These findings emphasize importance refrigerated, optimize bioconversion, improve value, minimize microbiological hazards.

This study assessed the performance of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) fed different tomato plant residues (fruit, leaves, and stems) at doses ranging from 100 to 350 mg/larva/day over ten days. Most resulted in 100% survival, except for leaf residue highest dose (300 mg/larva/day), which had an 88% survival rate. Growth varied by substrate, with increase observed larvae-fed fruit, followed stems leaves. However, no exceeded control diet regarding biomass accumulation, although fruit tomatoes produced wet (13.71 g). Larvae-fed also showed best waste reduction index (WRI) 7.56, substrate (SR) 75%, a feed conversion rate (FCR) 3.29. Furthermore, was most efficient converting organic into larval biomass. demonstrates potential using as sustainable BSFL, offering effective way manage agricultural produce valuable

The growing global population and increasing human demands have led to a rise in organic waste volumes. These wastes contain potential risk substances like pathogenic bacteria (PB), antibiotics (ABs), heavy metals (HMs), microplastics (MPs), which can threaten public health through direct contact or food chain transmission. Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) emerged as promising solution for management crop-livestock integration. They efficiently reduce matter, produce high-quality proteins fats, generate green biofertilizers, mitigate harmful greenhouse gas emissions. However, the specific mechanisms by BSFL transform fertilizers, remain unclear, significantly limiting further development application of bioconversion technology. In recent years, numerous studies revealed that gut microbiota possess functions such promoting degradation substrate nutrients, regulating host nutrient synthesis metabolism, directly indirectly inhibiting proliferation PB, biodegrading cometabolizing ABs, mitigating mobility HMs, MPs. Therefore, exploring developing could be great significance optimizing efficiency transformation, effectively reducing waste, their wide applications biomedicine energy sectors. This review systematically summarizes composition, function, environmental impacts microbiota, focusing on roles transformation We believe in-depth exploration this field will advance integrated systems, is essential achieving humanity's sustainable goals.
