The spread of sargassum on beaches in Africa, Brazil, Central America, and the Caribbean has increased to become a social, environmental, economic problem. In recent years, presence biomass coasts Mexican been recorded as ≈2360 m3 Km−1, reaching up 200 m wide northern part coasts. Its removal from coast and, later, continent is one strategies implemented mitigate its impact land. Several studies have reported seasonality geographic variation sorbed metals sargasso. However, it unknown whether these can mobilize or remain tissue once they reach accumulation sites. This study included seawater, consortium, S. natans fluitans, well leachate generated process degradation per se percolated by rain. Of 10 evaluated (As, B, Fe, Zn, Mn, Cd, Al, Ni, Cu, Pb for water, tissue, leachate), only B recurrent water north Caribbean, addition traces Al Fe. Meanwhile, results coincide with those previous studies, where As recurrent, although concentration varies mentioned variability. showed that four eight present were detected, including As, which represent potential coastal systems infiltration into shallow table areas.

Since 2011, massive strandings of holopelagic Sargassum have occurred on the coasts Caribbean and West Africa. Although open ocean mats are oases biodiversity, their stranding has a number negative ecological, economic health consequences. To limit these impacts, needs to be collected as quickly possible avoid its decomposition, which requires accurate predictions date, location abundance strandings. Two complementary approaches been developed for this purpose: satellite remote sensing technique, detect aggregations, modeling, forecast displacement growth. The objective review is provide synthesis current knowledge related monitoring in tropical Atlantic Ocean. better understand issues surrounding monitoring, first two parts devoted an overview ecology most prevailing species, strandings, causes occurrence Ocean seasonal interannual variabilities. methods used from images limitations examined. transport biogeochemical models described along with limitations. Converting Sargassum horneri (SH)—a harmful marine stranding that can cause golden tide—to highly porous bio-adsorbent material (via one-step catalytic oxidative pyrolysis with K2FeO4) be a strategically useful method for obtaining low-cost materials suitable CO2 capture. In this manuscript, the behavior of different mass ratios K2FeO4/SH precursor acting on surface physicochemical properties carbon are reported. The results suggest specific area and total pore volume first increased to ratio K2FeO4/carbon precursor, then decreased. Among samples prepared, highest was obtained 1:4 (25%-ASHC), adsorption performance significantly faster compared original biochar. fitted values three kinetic models showed double exponential model provided best description adsorption, indicating both physical chemical adsorption; 25%-ASHC also exhibited excellent cyclic stability. improved observed after K2FeO4 activation is mainly due increase in porosity, area, enrichment nitrogen oxygen functional groups.

Crop monitoring is a fundamental practice in seaweed aquaculture. Seaweeds are vulnerable to several threats such as ice-ice disease (IID) causing whitening of the thallus due depigmentation. condition assessment important for minimizing yield losses and improving biosecurity farms. The recent influence modern technology has resulted development precision present study focuses on exploitation spectral reflectance visible near-infrared regions characterizing crop two most cultivated Eucheumatoids species: Kappaphycus alvareezi Eucheuma denticulatum. In particular, resolution examined towards discriminating: (a) species morphotypes, (b) different levels health (i.e., from healthy completely depigmented) (c) depigmented silted specimens (thallus covered by thin layer sediment). Two libraries were built at resolutions (5 45 bands) using situ data. addition, proximal multispectral imagery drone-based sensor was utilised. At each experimental scenario, data classified Random Forest algorithm identification. results showed good discrimination (83–99% overall accuracy) conditions morphotypes regardless resolution. According importance scores hyperspectral data, useful wavelengths identified discriminating seaweeds with varying symptoms IID thalli whitening). These assisted selecting set vegetation indices testing their ability improve characterisation. Specifically, five (the RBNDVI, GLI, Hue, Green–Red ratio NGRDI) found classification accuracy, making them recommended monitoring. Image-based demonstrated that library can be extended photomosaics assess broad scale. this suggest sensing first step effective monitoring, enhancing contributing aquaculture biosecurity.
