Abstract
The
burgeoning
illegal
trade
in
succulents
southern
Africa
presents
a
critical
conservation
and
social
development
challenge.
Drawing
parallels
with
the
trajectory
of
response
to
rhinoceros
poaching,
we
considered
consequences
law
enforcement
measures,
particularly
militarization
antipoaching
efforts.
poaching
not
only
resulted
so‐called
green
militarization,
but
also
led
extrajudicial
killings,
human
rights
abuses,
disproportionate
targeting
low‐level
poachers.
nature
wildlife
prohibition
is
complex
often
contested,
many
actors
operating
trades
dispute
label
for
socioeconomic,
cultural,
historical,
or
political
reasons.
This
contestation
crucial
when
considering
Indigenous
cultural
medicinal
values
succulents,

criminalization
traditional
plant
harvesting
practices.
As

grow,
it
imperative
conservationists
consider
nuanced
approach.
We
call
socioecological
harm
reduction
approach
that
emphasizes
community
engagement,
sustainable
use,

interventions.
