Size-Dependent Effects of Polystyrene Nanoplastics on Freshwater Microalgae After Long-Term Exposure DOI Open Access

Nanoplastics (NPs), an emerging pollutant distributed in different sizes the aquatic environment, adversely affect ecosystems. However, knowledge of effects NPs various on phytoplankton, especially freshwater microalgae, is still limited. In this study, we explore three polystyrene (PS-NPs) with particle (20, 50, and 80 nm) chronic toxicity a widely microalga, Chlorella pyrenoidosa. The results showed that PS-NPs-20, PS-NPs-50, PS-NPs-80 promoted growth C. pyrenoidosa at early stage exposure, highest promotion rates 46.1%, 56%, 86.2%, respectively. PS-NPs-20 PS-NPs-50 inhibited photosynthesis during mid- late-exposure periods also induced increase secretion reactive oxygen species extracellular polymers. inhibition were 33.2% 13.6%, By contrast, growth-promoting effect continued until middle stage, it was only late exposure some growth-inhibitory occurred, rate 7.8%. transmission electron microscopy damaged algal cells more severely than day 21. Notably, size-dependent PS-NPs observed pyrenoidosa, but no dose-dependent found. These will improve our understanding to microalgae may provide basis for evaluating ecological risk environments.
