Abstract BACKGROUND Cereal–legume intercropping provides a solution for achieving global food security, but the mechanism of greenhouse gas emissions and net ecosystem economic benefits maize–soybean relay are poorly understood. Hence, we conducted two‐factor experiment to investigate effects cropping systems, containing (IMS), monoculture maize (M) soybean (S), as well three nitrogen levels at 0 (N0), 180 (N1), 240 (N2) kg N ha −1 on crop grain yield, emissions, soil carbon stock benefit (NEEB). RESULTS The average yield IMS (7.7 t ) increased by 28.5% 242.4% compared with M (6.0 S (2.2 ). land equivalent ratio (LER) was 2.0, which mainly contributed (partial LER: 1.2) rather than 0.8). Although total remarkably enhanced 43.6% 45.5% in N1 N2 contrast N0, LER 37.5% 38.6% lower N0. warming potential (GWP) 11.6% 1.8% corresponding monoculture, resulted from decline GWP organic rate. Moreover, NEEB 133.5% higher (14 032.0 Chinese yuan per year) M, resulting an increase gains cost. A more robust response gain costs inputs led 46.8% 48.3% CONCLUSION Maize–soybean application can obtain advantages without raising environmental costs, approach sustainable agricultural production. © 2024 Society Chemical Industry.

An increase in the amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) atmosphere causes global warming, and >14% all GHG emissions come from agricultural activities. The three primary atmospheric GHGs are CO2, CH4, N2O; therefore, regulating agroecosystems is important for climate management. Straw return an environmentally friendly practice that positively affects crop production soil fertility. However, its effects on long-term remain controversial. To examine impact straw Chinese maize fields, 281 data pairs 45 publications were assessed using a meta-analysis. findings demonstrated substantial increases CO2 N2O 140 40%, respectively. Methane increased by 3% after return, maximum effect value was 2.66 at nitrogen rates<150 kg/hm2. CH4 with decrease organic content, changed negative to positive concentrations >6 g/kg. With rate increase, emission under initially then decreased. significantly when rates were<250 results random forest model showed most factor affecting corn fields applied, carbon content. This shows suitable can achieve mutually beneficial goal guaranteeing food security minimizing adverse environment.
