The European Union (EU) has set itself the goal of becoming a resource-efficient circular economy. It therefore begun tackling its increasing amounts packaging waste using both regulations and strategies, with member countries aiming to increase their recycling rates for plastic 55% by 2030. However, EU states have different methods collecting data on rates, which makes it difficult compare performance in reaching that target. This article introduces method compile industry-specific accounting packaging, Finnish economy as an example. combines from extended producer responsibility scheme standard economic statistics, thus enabling calculation transparent estimates total amount placed market. also provides sector-specific management strategies are aimed at achieving higher material rates. is compared approach based analysis, demonstrating results market more reliable. available linked generalisations composition studies own uncertainties.
