SWOT satellite for global hydrological applications: accuracy assessment and insights into surface water dynamics

The
Surface
Water
and
Ocean
Topography
(SWOT)
satellite,
launched
in
December
2022,
marks
a
significant
breakthrough
hydrological
monitoring.
Equipped
with
Ka-band
radar
interferometer,
nadir
altimeter,
radiometers,
SWOT
enables
simultaneous
measurements
of
water
levels,
widths,
slopes
unprecedented
spatiotemporal
resolution.
This
manuscript
systematically
reviews
SWOT's
satellite
parameters,
scientific
missions,
algorithm
processes,
application
products
to
provide
more
comprehensive
understanding
its
capabilities.
Validation
ICESat-2
other
reference
datasets
shows
that
WSE
achieve
an
accuracy
up
0.18
m
for
inland
surface
elevation
measurements,
thereby
significantly
improving
the
precision
body

potential
flood
monitoring
by
capturing

Driven
by
economic
expansion,
urbanization,
and
population
growth,
the
world
is
witnessing
an
escalating
demand
for
water,
energy,
land,
food,
posing
substantial
threats
to
sustainable
development
of
societies
economies.
Given
intricate
interdependencies
inherent
within
water–energy–land–food
(WELF)
system,
it
imperative
conduct
comprehensive
assessments
coupling
coordination
WELF
system
over
long
time
scales
diverse
characteristic
dimensions.
This
study
selects
Hebei
province,
China,
as
research
region,
constructing
a
indicator
spanning
from
1980
2020
using
three
dimensions:
reliability
(Rel),
robustness
(Rob),
equilibrium
(Equ).
The
degree
(DCC)
index
(SDI)
were
developed
evaluation
model.
Additionally,
obstacle
model
gray
relational
employed
assess
indicators
that
hinder
or
promote
SDI.
results
indicate
