This research explores the effectiveness of phytoremediation as a sustainable method for sewage treatment, focusing on performance Arundo donax in subsurface vertical flow constructed wetland at Al-Muamirah treatment station Hilla, Iraq. The study presents an alternative to conventional systems, particularly suited resource-constrained regions. Key pollutants such biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical (COD), total nitrogen (TN), phosphorus (TP), and suspended solids (TSS) were analyzed assess removal efficiencies. Data collected over period from October 2023 March 2024 using batch-mode system with influent rate 0.05276 m³/day (± 0.016 m³/day). Optimal hydraulic retention times (HRT) identified 5 days BOD, COD, TSS, while TN TP required extended 8 due their reliance slower microbial adsorption processes effective removal. A control unit, lacking plant integration, was used comparative analysis. results demonstrated that achieved efficiencies 91% 84.28% 68.37% TN, 73.42% TP, 89.23% significantly outperforming setup. These findings emphasize critical role optimized HRT enhancing pollutant removal, nutrients like underscore potential eco-friendly solution wastewater management.
