Abstract Surface water drying challenges the persistence of lotic biological assemblages in non‐perennial streams and rivers. However, effects natural hydrological disturbances on an assemblage depend individual species characteristics. In this study, we investigated structure association fish macroinvertebrate during two phases (flowing vs. disconnected pools). We sampled five stream reaches located Caatinga (Brazilian semi‐arid region). Fish were resistant to dynamics streams. On other hand, some taxa from flowing phase disappeared, new colonized pools. The absence insects following flow cessation colonization pools by lentic facilitated these dynamic Our study showed that respond differently same cessation, which leads us predict changes will yield different assemblages, depending . Thus, it is crucial consider multi‐assemblage responses effectively manage conserve ecosystems a tropical region.

ABSTRACT Managing fish populations in regulated rivers requires an understanding of the spatial and temporal scale their dispersal, locations key spawning nursery habitats hydraulic processes that interplay with life history. Golden perch ( Macquaria ambigua ), Australian freshwater pelagic‐spawning fish, highlights worldwide challenges managing riverine species rely on conditions to sustain critical metapopulation processes. This study aimed quantify early history golden dispersal after a drought‐breaking in‐channel flow event 2020 lowland river. Otolith microchemistry 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) determined natal origins sibling relationships, respectively, young‐of‐year (YOY) caught floodplain larval captured upstream. For collected nursery, distances ranged ~1600 km. attributed 52% YOY as localised origin, 44% originating midcatchment 4% from most upstream sample locations. Genetic analyses identified full‐sibling pair 900 km apart 31 half‐sibling pairs linked at diversity sites. Our range scales over which ELH can occur for emphasises importance interconnected flowing river sustaining We illustrate positive results increased connectivity yield similar strategies.
