Abstract Food packaging (FP) is essential for preserving food quality, safety, and extending shelf‐life. However, growing concerns about the environmental health impacts of conventional materials, particularly per‐ polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) microplastics, are driving a major transformation in FP design. PFAS, synthetic compounds with dual hydro‐ lipophobicity, have been widely employed materials (FPMs) to impart desirable water grease repellency. PFAS bioaccumulate human body linked multiple effects, including immune system dysfunction, cancer, developmental problems. The detection microplastics various FPMs has raised significant regarding their potential migration into subsequent ingestion. This comprehensive review examines current landscape FPMs, functions, physicochemical properties put perspective why there widespread use FPMs. then addresses challenges posed by emphasizing urgent need sustainable bio‐based alternatives. We highlight promising advancements renewable plant‐derived polysaccharides, proteins, waxes, as well recycled upcycled materials. integration these active systems also examined, indicating innovations oxygen scavengers, moisture absorbers, antimicrobial packaging. concludes identifying key research gaps future directions, life cycle assessments strategies improve scalability cost‐effectiveness. As industry evolves, holistic approach considering impact, functionality, consumer acceptance will be crucial developing truly solutions.

Given that a substantial amount of time is spent in kitchens preparing food, the kitchen equipment used may be relevant determining composition and microplastics ending up on our dinner plate. While previous research has predominantly focused foodstuffs as source microplastics, we emphasise micro- nanoplastics are ubiquitous likely originate from diverse sources. To address existing knowledge gap regarding additional sources contributing to plates, this review investigates various processes, utensils (excluding single-use items foodstuffs) get better understanding potential microplastic within home kitchen. Conducting narrative literature using terms related kitchenware kitchen-affiliated study underscores selection preparation tools, storage, serving, cooking, cleaning procedures have significant impact exposure. Mechanical, physical, chemical processes occurring during food contribute release particles, challenging assumption exposure solely tied products or packaging. This highlights kitchens, posing concerns for safety human health.
