Abstract Background The global freshwater biodiversity crisis has led to widespread implementation of measures counteract environmental degradation and loss. While these efforts aim foster recovery, intensifying stressors continue drive complex biotic responses, the trajectories drivers which are insufficiently understood. This study examines roles abiotic stressors, interactions (e.g., competition), land use in shaping ecological status changes across Germany, using data from 1599 river sites sampled at least twice between 2004 2022. Results Changes emerged as most consistent status, explaining substantial variation ( R 2 = 0.39) similar slopes for recovery β − 0.11) 0.10). Biotic interactions, particularly interspecific competition, also influenced 0.11), with stronger positive effects observed during 2.99) compared 1.59). Land varied by context: Streams catchments higher cropland or urban areas showed greater likelihood whereas streams forested were more prone degradation. These results highlight interplay factors driving processes Conclusion findings emphasize critical role improving water quality enhancing rivers, while demonstrating importance context dynamics. Integrating insights into management restoration can enhance ecosystem resilience face escalating pressures.

Macroinvertebrates of the Venta River have been studied since beginning 20th century. However, complex studies along from Latvian–Lithuanian border to its mouth into Baltic Sea irregular and fragmentary. The aim this study was assess ecological status analyze abundance fauna composition macroinvertebrates entire length river in territory Latvia. This is first kind for examining specialization sediment substrates their functional feeding groups. Within framework study, importance assessed 10 sampling sites together with quality using several indices. results show that dominated by benthic invertebrate collectors/gatherers, active filterers, grazers, scrapers adapted particular type sediments formed silt, macrophytes, rocks, pebbles. Different indices were calculated order River. According saprobity index, water corresponds β-mesosaprobity, while mostly average; however, according multimetric indices, varies poor high depending on station.

Abstract Scientists have investigated the thermal tolerance of organisms for centuries, yet field has not lost relevance as environmental threats pollution and global change sharpen need to understand vulnerability in landscapes increasingly subjected multiple stressors. Freshwater fish especially invertebrates are greatly underrepresented recent large-scale compilations tolerance, despite importance freshwater habitats a crucial resource biodiversity havens. This inspired us create database these that includes literature from 1900 until present day sourced five languages counteract geographic bias, 395 tests conducted with additional stressors present. The contains over 5000 records 800 species, including 452 invertebrates, providing valuable test hypotheses on risks future environments, how might stressor scenarios.
