Stethorus punctillum Weise, a predatory beetle attacking phytophagous mites in northwest China, remains underutilized for biological control. Current over-reliance on synthetic acaricides necessitates evaluation of their non-target effects this predator, particularly safety and sublethal impacts. Here, we assessed the acute toxicity four to S. laboratory bioassays then focused impacts abamectin adult predation efficiency lifespan. Based LC50 values, toxicities tested against larvae adults both ranked as follows (from greatest least): > pyridaben spirotetramat petroleum oil. All exhibited selective (STR: 2.16–182.49) with moderate low risk (SF: 0.46–8.71). Notably, oil, despite showing lowest punctillum, posed highest 0.46–0.77). Abamectin exposures at LC20 or significantly compromised adults, prolonging prey handling time (females: 33–100%; males: 40%), reducing maximum daily 25–50%; 29%), shortening lifespan 2.34–3.17 days; 3.95–5.08 days). This study commonly used revealing abamectin-induced impairments key traits. Our findings offer critical insights risk-aware acaricide selection integrated spider mite management strategies agroecosystems China.

Roughly 40% of global agri-food production is lost to pests during an era when productivity gains are essential humanity. Restoring farmland biodiversity for conservation biological control offers potential secure win-win outcomes yield and the environment. However, achieving this hindered by gaps in our understanding agrobiodiversity, including a lack data on occurrence, identity, interactions farm-dwelling (plant, animal, microbial) biota. Limited interdisciplinary collaboration weak policy frameworks exacerbate these issues. Comprehensive capture using standardized metrics, universal protocols, farmer-scientist cooperation, next-generation tools could consolidate evidence base which reform farming practice. This will involve ecologists stepping outside their comfort zones promote behavioral change make ecological intensification reality.

Biological control has been effectively exploited by mankind since 300 CE. By promoting the natural regulation of pests, weeds, and diseases, it produces societal benefits at food-environment-health nexus. Here we scrutinize biological endeavours their social-ecological outcomes through a holistic 'One-Health' lens, recognizing that health humans, animals, plants, wider environment are linked interdependent. Evidence shows generates desirable within all One Health dimensions, mitigating global change issues such as chemical pollution, biocide resistance, biodiversity loss, habitat destruction. Yet, its cross-disciplinary achievements remain underappreciated. To remedy this, advocate systems-level, integrated approach to research, policy, practice. Framing in context helps unite medical veterinary personnel, ecologists, conservationists agricultural professionals joint quest for solutions some most pressing planetary health.
