Microplastics, as an emerging environmental pollutant, have received widespread attention for their potential impact on ecosystems and human health. Microplastics are defined plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in diameter can be categorized primary secondary microplastics. Primary microplastics usually originate directly from industrial production, while formed by the degradation of larger items. capable triggering cytotoxicity chronic inflammation, may promote cancer through mechanisms such pro-inflammatory responses, oxidative stress endocrine disruption. Coastal wetlands function as critical retention zones for environmental microplastics, potentially accelerating their degradation through unique hydrological conditions. This study conducted a comprehensive 24-month in situ experiment at the Chongming Dongtan National Nature Reserve, examining weathering processes of five morphologically distinct polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), and polystyrene (PS) microplastics. Quarterly analyses revealed progressive surface deterioration all microplastics after initial exposure, followed by polymer-specific fragmentation patterns pollutant adherence. Surface elemental analysis showed rising O/C ratios, with intertidal exhibiting higher variance (0.0014-0.0096 vs 0.0006-0.0028 supratidal). Carbonyl index (CI) displayed fluctuating increases, PS showing highest CI rise (75.75%/year 61.77%/year Systematic comparisons identified three determinants: enhanced from mechanical-photochemical synergy; spherical particles degrading faster than films via larger area; polymer vulnerabilities dictating > PP PE rates. These findings demonstrate that microplastic coastal is collectively governed conditions, particle morphology, composition, providing crucial quantitative parameters assessing persistence ecological risks these sensitive transition ecosystems.
