Nano-fibrillated bacterial cellulose (NFBC) has very long fibers (>17 μm) with diameters of approximately 20 nm. Hence, they have a high aspect ratio and surface area. The specific area NFBC can potentially be utilized as an adsorbent. However, no functional groups that bind metal ions, limiting its potential applications. In this study, the hydroxyl on were chemically modified EDTA monoanhydride to convert into fiber morphology crystal structures almost identical those unmodified NFBC, suggesting well-conjugated groups.
