Mussels serve as indicators of anthropogenic chemical pollution; however, the effects microplastics and plastic-related chemicals on their health performance remain an emerging issue. In this study, mussels were exposed to a polyamide (PA; 5 μg/L) tricresyl phosphate (TCP; 1 for 28 days. The exposures two contaminants performed independently or in combination lasted results showed that independent exposure altered enzyme activities more significantly than combined one. Exposure PA (p < 0.05) inhibited antioxidant catalase (CAT) by 43.5% neurotransmitter acetylcholinesterase (AChE) 40.6%, while TCP specifically carboxylesterase (CE) activity 38.5%, all respect solvent control. Microplastic contamination is rapidly becoming an increasingly worrying environmental problem and poses a real threat to marine ecosystems human health. The aim of this research was conduct traditional review the current state art regarding sources MPs in environment, including assessment their toxic effect on organisms transfer within food webs up humans. An extensive literature search (from 1 January 2024 15 February 2025) yielded total 1027 primary articles topic. This overview revealed that can be ingested by organisms, migrate through intestinal wall, spread other organs. They biomagnify along chain carriers chemicals pathogen agents. Exposure lead several risks, tissue damage, oxidative stress, changes immune-related gene expression, neurotoxicity, growth retardation, behavioural abnormalities. toxicity depends mainly particle size distribution composition/characteristics polymer. main routes exposure have been identified as ingestion (mainly seafood), inhalation, dermal exposure. There strong evidence seafood MPs, which pose potential risk study provides basis for assessing MPs’ health impacts.

The presence of antibiotics in seafood for human consumption may pose a risk consumers. Furthermore, some marine organisms, such as mussels, can result appropriate bioindicators contamination. In this work, multiresidue analytical methodology suitable the determination and metabolites mussels is proposed. target compounds include three sulphonamides trimethoprim (TMP) six their main metabolites. Sample treatment involves extraction clean-up single step using matrix solid-phase dispersion with acetonitrile. Analytical was carried out by liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry. Good linearity (R2 > 0.99), accuracy (from 80.8 to 118%), limits quantification (lower than 5 ng g−1 (dry matter, dm)) were obtained all selected compounds. method applied mussel samples from an exposure assay contaminated seawater TMP sulfamethoxazole (SMX). Both detected analysed concentrations up 77.5 dm. bioconcentrated higher extent SMX, attributable its hydrophobicity. None detected. These results demonstrate that Mytilus galloprovincialis bioindicator assess pollution.
