Abstract Agricultural activities contribute to plastic pollution, with unintentional introduction and intentional use of mulch films leading the accumulation microplastic particles in soils. The lack removal techniques scarce information on effects soil organisms, especially for biodegradable films, necessitate an assessment potential effects. This study aimed elucidate film fauna by investigating reproduction output subcellular responses before after recovery from exposure. Two common Folsomia candida Eisenia fetida , were exposed petroleum-based polyethylene (PE) polylactic acid/polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PLA/PBAT) 28 days, according OECD guidelines 232 222, respectively. Juvenile numbers revealed no polymer- or concentration-dependent E. F. exposure up 5 10 g/kg dw soil, To provide a more sensitive early indication sublethal effects, analyzed. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity increased rising concentration; however, catalase (CAT), acetylcholine esterase (AChE) activity, reactive oxygen species (ROS) did not differ control levels. Further, environmentally relevant PE polymer was chosen in-depth response 28-day subsequent days uncontaminated . No significant differences biomarker stress levels observed. We conclude that film–derived adversely affect earthworm collembolan this scenario, except slight induction detoxification enzyme glutathione S-transferase.
