Abstract The urban expansion‐induced heat can exacerbate stress for dwellers, especially during waves. With a focus on the intra‐urban variability of islands (UHIs) and thermal comfort, parameterization within Community Land Model version 5 (CLM5) was modified incorporating local climate zones (LCZs) framework, named CLM5‐LCZs, to simulate wave (HW) event in summer 2013. evaluation model performance demonstrated that it did reasonable job simulating surface energy balance regimes cities against observational fluxes from flux tower measurement site temperatures automatic meteorological stations Nanjing, China. Then we investigated characteristics causes UHIs associated with background climate, inhomogeneity HW intensity East results exhibited daytime nighttime canopy island (CUHII) were highest Compact Low Rise (LCZ3) High (LCZ1) areas, respectively, while (SUHII) peaked Large (LCZ8) areas nighttime, respectively. Urban dwellers easier exposed serious environment LCZ3 LCZ1 over north subtropical zone. Contrasts CUHII SUHII among different classes could exceed 1.7°C 5.4°C. heterogeneity may alter dominant factors controlling SUHII, which also modulated by intensity. Unlike other factors, impact contribution urban‐rural contrast convection efficiency larger than features. Overall, CLM5‐LCZs displayed potential implementing detailed simulations inter‐ intra‐city at scale, enhancing capabilities modeling exploring controls UHIs.

Urban heat islands (UHIs) aggravate urban stress and, therefore, exacerbate heat-related morbidity and mortality as global warming continues. Numerous studies used surface island intensity (SUHII) to quantify the change in UHI effect its drivers for mitigation. However, whether variations SUHII among cities can demonstrate physical difference fluctuation of thermal environment is poorly understood. Here, we present a comparison study on temporal trends LST nonurban areas 13 Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) megaregion China further identify different types changes based land temperature (LST) from 2000 2020. We also measured four socioecological factors (i.e., population density, vegetation greenness (EVI), GDP, built-up area) understand dynamic interaction between development. found following. (1) Nine out thirteen showed significant increasing trend SUHII, indicating that SUHI effects have been intensified most BTH megaregion. (2) The spatial pattern summer mean varied greatly. Among cities, Beijing had highest but Handan temperature, which suggests city with stronger does not necessarily higher or hazardous environment. (3) Four were identified resulted areas. In particular, one type seven greater (increasing LST) than (SUHII↑1), another Chengde was attributed cooling (decreasing (SUHII↑2). Meanwhile, third Zhangjiakou due (SUHII↑3). contrast, three decreasing caused by increase areas, (SUHII↓1). (4) relationship (TrendSUHII) (Trendpopulation TrendGDP per captica, TrendEVI, Trendbuild-up area), significantly positive correlation TrendSUHII TrendEVI indicated related an increased rate EVI. This mainly because would result lower temperatures

China has the largest number of villages in world, and research on rural microclimate will contribute to global climate knowledge. A three-by-three grid method was developed explore village microclimates through field measurement ENVI-met simulation. regression model used mechanistic relationship between spatial morphology, predicted mean vote (PMV) selected evaluate outdoor thermal comfort. The results showed that able microclimate, as Pearson’s correlation coefficient greater than 0.8 absolute percentage error (MAPE) from 2.16% 3.79%. Moreover, air temperature west–east road slightly higher south–north, especially morning. height-to-width ratio (H/W) most significant factor affect compared building coverage (PBC) wind speed. In addition, H/W had a relatively strong negative when 0.52 0.93. PMV indicated downwind edge area prevailing comfortable. This study provides data support reference for optimizing land use, mediating living environment, promoting revitalization.
