Abstract Purpose of Review Agroforestry and urban forestry have evolved mainly as separate disciplines, although they share a long history tree cultivation in man-made environments. Here, we review their common threads, exploring how trees both systems interact with shape We examine themes methodologies – ranging from growth dynamics to environmental stressors, ecosystem services provision, questions governance identify opportunities for synergies between these fields. Recent Findings emphasize the potential agroforestry enhancing multifunctional landscapes. Geographical divides research are evident, predominantly studied Global South receiving more attention North. However, significant gaps provide avenues collaboration, instance, addressing challenges capturing monetary socio-cultural value justice considerations. Summary In light growing need integrated approaches contemporary challenges, climate change mitigation adaptation community well-being, our explores what fields can learn each other provides recommendations fostering greater interdisciplinary dialogue new collaborations meaningful synergistic manner, aiming advance policy, research, practice forestry.

Numerous cities undertakes substantial tree planting initiatives for heatwave mitigation, driven by model predictions indicating a positive mitigation impact. However, emerging studies suggest that the transpiration behavior of trees during heatwaves significantly deviates from normal. This divergence, overlooked in current climate models, introduces possibility inaccuracies predicting cooling heatwaves. In this research, 1) The universality changed heat wave is revealed: study over 700 various species indicates at least 65 % sampled overestimated conventional waves. 2) scheme within revised to represent new pattern. Comparison shows overestimates peak hour efficiency 60 %. Consequently, effectiveness large-scale tree-planting as strategy may not meet expectations, emphasizing need refinement

Abstract Context Urban parks are essential for maintaining aesthetics within cities and keeping their its energy balance by helping mitigate the Heat Island (UHI) effect through controlling ambient land surface temperature (LST). Objectives To investigate impact of cooling in terms distance variously configured urban a humid subtropical city, using landscape metrics open-source data. Methods Land use (LU) was obtained maximum likelihood classification 3 m resolution aerial RGB-NIR imagery supported ground control points park boundaries collected during field survey. LST at matching downscaling Landsat-8 30/100m resolution, calculated with Radiative Transfer Equation (RTE). Landscape patches were landscapemetrics R library related to neighbourhood distances over built-up (LU). Results homogenous cores less complex shape provide distinctly higher neighbouring LU circa 2.55 °C 18 from boundaries. Four metrics: contiguity index (CONTIG), core area (CAI), fractal dimension (FRAC) perimeter-area ratio (PARA) represent significant relationship between spatial configuration distance. No capacity regardless observed beyond m, which remained constant small fluctuations range 0.5 up 600 m. Conclusions The study concludes that extends is shorter than suggested other studies.

Rapid urbanization creates complexity, results in dynamic changes land and environment, influences the surface temperature (LST) fast-developing cities. In this study, we examined impact of use/land cover (LULC) on LST determined intensity urban heat island (UHI) New Town Kolkata (a smart city), eastern India, from 1991 to 2021 at 10-a intervals using various series Landsat multi-spectral thermal bands. This study used maximum likelihood algorithm for image classification other methods like correlation analysis hotspot (Getis–Ord Gi* method) examine LULC environment. noticed that area percentage built-up increased rapidly 21.91% 45.63% during 1991–2021, with a positive change negative sparse vegetation. The mean significantly period (1991–2021), 16.31°C 22.48°C winter, 29.18°C 34.61°C summer, 19.18°C 27.11°C autumn. result showed impervious surfaces contribute higher LST, whereas vegetation helps decrease it. Poor ecological status has been found land, excellent water body. hot spot cold areas shifted their locations every decade due random changes. Even after became city, high observed. Overall, indicated patterns can influence appropriate planning is needed reduce LST. help policy-makers create sustainable
