Interoception plays a crucial role in maintaining bodily homeostasis and promoting survival, is considered the basis of human emotion, cognition, self-formation. A malfunction interoception increasingly suggested to be fundamental component different mental health conditions, depressive disorders have been especially closely associated. Interoceptive signaling processing depends on system called “interoceptive pathway,” with insula, located deep part lateral fissure, being most important brain structure this pathway. Neuroimaging studies revealed alterations function insula large number individuals depression, yet precise relationship between these interoceptive dysfunction remains unclear.
