Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution poses a major threat to human physical and mental health. Smart cities (SCs) provide innovative paths for PM2.5 prevention control through Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring, intelligent transportation optimization, other technological means. Based on the panel data 2,141 counties in China between 2006 2021, this paper constructs difference-in-differences with multiple time periods (MDID) systematically assess impact SC concentration analyze its mechanism action by combining satellite remote sensing (PM2.5C) list smart city pilots. This study finds following: (1) significantly reduced test area about 3.58%. conclusion was verified rigorous robustness testing; (2) can effectively reduce PM2.5C innovation effect; (3) High-quality economic development strengthen emission reduction effect PM2.5C; (4) The environmental benefits show significant spatial heterogeneity, largest reductions occurring western regions (4.3% reduction), followed mature digital infrastructure high administrative level cities. results reference regional differentiated implementation “14th Five-Year Plan Development Innovative Smarter Cities”, make targeted recommendations synergistic management air quality under “dual-carbon” goal.
