Marine Ecosystem-Based Management (EBM) approaches are a well-established and fundamental component of international agreements treaties, regional seas conventions, assessment strategies, European Directives national instruments. However, there is the need to interrogate clarify implementation EBM under current marine management. Although particular focus here within Union Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), all lessons learned applicable assessments management in worldwide given that instruments aim ensure sustainability ecosystems human uses. Notably, MSFD aims Good Environmental Status (GES) will be achieved thereby enabling coastal deliver ecosystem services societal goods benefits while at same time being adaptive rapid climate environmental changes. As clear understanding tools available achieve it needed for practitioners, regulators their advisors, analysis firstly presents (including its origin application) wider 26 principles on which based. Secondly, we identify key elements addressed by those (18 elements). Thirdly, types use context (19 tool groups). Fourthly analyze suitability using an expert judgement approach. Finally, conclude with from briefly indicate how they could combined help most effective way. It emphasized no single likely satisfy aspects therefore employing complementary suite as part toolbox recommended.
