The discovery of complete ammonia oxidizers, comammox Nitrospira, represents a breakthrough in the history nitrification research. Nitrospira inopinata, which was obtained from an aquatic ecosystem, is only pure bacterial isolate reported so far. Ammonia oxidation kinetics N. inopinata indicated that they prefer oligotrophic lifestyle and may directly compete with ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA), but representatives terrestrial ecosystems are lacking. Current studies demonstrate functionally dominant separated most sequences engineering systems. Clades A B seemingly have different ecological preferences soils, possibly due to their ammonium uptake Analyses evolutionary indicate some genes involved could be laterally transferred β-ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Some species similar AOB active niches where previously considered dominated by AOB. Taken together, this review summarizes recent findings biogeographical distribution preference large-scale soil surveys, responses nitrogen application soil, putative mechanisms underpinning niche Nitrospira. These suggest not strictly both copiotrophic broader breadth. Comammox abundant environments. profoundly expanded our knowledge environmental relative contribution soils.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of soil pH change, and nitrogen amendment on ammonia oxidiser abundance comammox Nitrospira community composition. The experimental design used mesocosms placed in a temperature-controlled incubator for 90 days. A Templeton silt loam was as its physiochemical properties are typical region's dairy farms. results showed that clade B preferred natural (pH 6.1–6.2) with no applied nitrogen. Furthermore, synthetic urine (N700) decreased B. may have been because large amounts available N700 treatments inhibited growth Nitrospira. These suggest while present New Zealand farm soils, but their role nitrification very high environment under patch grazed pastures be limited. Further research is needed confirm this. In contrast comammox, AOB (dominated by Nitrosospira) responded positively application urine. response greatest (7.1), followed then low (4.9) soils. due difference availability. At pH, ammonia/ammonium equilibrium favours production. Calculated availability accurately predicted amoA gene abundance. Interestingly, AOA (which predominantly made up Thaumarchaeota group I.1b E) seemed prefer soils over pH. specific lineage present. did not respond

Abstract The abundance and phylogenetic diversity of functional genes involved in nitrification were assessed Rothamsted field plots under contrasting management regimes—permanent bare fallow, grassland, arable (wheat) cultivation maintained for more than 50 years. Metagenome metatranscriptome analysis indicated nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) abundant ammonia archaea (AOA) (AOB) all soils. most AOA AOB the metagenomes were, respectively, Nitrososphaera Ca. Nitrososcosmicus (family Nitrososphaeraceae) Nitrosospira Nitrosomonas Nitrosomonadaceae). NOB Nitrospira including comammox species inopinata, N. nitrificans Ca . nitrosa. Anammox also detected Nitrososphaeraceae showed transcriptional activity soil. Similar numbers sequences assigned to amoA AOB, highest soil metagenome metatranscriptome; reads included those from clades A B, addition Nitrosomonadaceae. Nitrification potential experimental sites (microcosms amended or not with DCD at concentrations inhibitory but AOA), was samples lower assays containing DCD, indicating responsible ammonium fertilizer added these
