Abstract Ongoing global climate change and conventional forestry have led to a dramatic increase in new forest gaps, predicted strongly impact litter turnover nutrient cycling. Here we synthesized 8739 paired observations quantify the impacts of naturally occurring artificially created gaps on litterfall, decomposition, release carbon nutrients. Globally, decreased annual litterfall by 29.5% remaining phosphorus 5.6%, while decomposition increased 0–20% mass loss interval. Climate quality showed major contribution gap effects with characteristics further influencing nutrients during decomposition. Our results uncovered potential escalating reducing sequestration, providing support for inclusion into dynamic models improve predictions ecosystem material cycling responses ongoing change.
