Abstract Key message Metabarcoding analysis of soil fungal communities in French mountain forests revealed that harvesting intensity, time since last harvest and former land use had no effect on community composition compared to key abiotic factors. Low-intensity management these uneven-aged therefore has limited effects which is mainly driven by elevation edaphic properties. Context Past current human activities are known affect forest biodiversity. However, the have been studied much more extensively higher plants than fungi. Aims Our objectives were assess duration high forests. Methods On basis historical land-use maps drawn between 1862 1864 archives, we selected 62 sites Alps with contrasting histories (ancient forests, already forested vs recent recovered following abandonment pastures) different durations (from 1 over 50 years). We carried out sampling assessed diversity metabarcoding analysis. analysed molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTU) as a whole for main lifestyle groups (such wood saprotrophic or ectomycorrhizal fungi) using multiple linear regressions Shannon’s index canonical correlation Results found significant history total MOTU diversity, composition. In contrast, observed elevation, pH, organic carbon available phosphorus content functional communities. Conclusions The structure (i.e. species composition) was determined factors, indicating high-context dependency, previously similar studies. study shows established pastures legacy conditions communities, contrast previous results lowland areas, where cropland. Recent climate and land use change, pollution have led to concerning alterations in biodiversity ecosystem functions, jeopardizing nature's contributions people. Mountainous regions are not immune these threats, experiencing the impacts of global warming, increased recreational activities, changes agricultural practices. Leveraging natural elevational gradients mountain environments, ORCHAMP program was established 2016 as a comprehensive initiative monitor, understand, predict repercussions environmental on associated functions French Alps Pyrenees.Beyond its monitoring role, has catalyzed development tools for data integration, statistical analyses, visualization, AI-based automated processing predictions. Through combination traditional sampling methods (e.g., botanical surveys) cutting-edge technologies (remote-sensing, DNA, video, acoustic sensors), offers holistic approach understanding how faces changes. By showcasing examples key results, this paper provides an overview ORCHAMP's advancements outlines potential future directions. The broad inclusion diverse techniques treatments positions pioneering effort, paving way long-term insights into dynamics—a crucial step toward effective conservation strategies.
