Herbivore elicitors, most of which identified thus far are from the oral secretions (OS) herbivores, important in herbivore-induced plant defense. However, whether and how larval OS striped stem borer (SSB), Chilo suppressalis, a devastating pest on rice, induce defenses remains largely unknown. We found that treating plants with SSB enhanced levels phosphorylated OsMPK3/4/6, JA, JA-Ile, ethylene, ABA subsequently induced production defense compounds, such as trypsin protease inhibitors, decreased growth larvae. Digestion by proteinase K induction activity rice defense, but it still activated OsMPK6, ABA, ethylene pathways, resistance. Treating fractions did not contain fatty acid-amino acid conjugates (FACs) whereas other containing FACs not. Bioassays revealed impairing JA or signaling pathway These results demonstrate both proteins/peptides non-proteins/peptides-but FACs-in play central role inducing activating pathways mediated ethylene.
