Board games can support engagement, deep information processing and learning outcomes for university students. The instructional context, notably the way an activity is introduced to students, influence students' behavior outcomes. Yet, despite its potential important on in-game learning, impact of context used introduce a game-based has not received much attention. In two studies, we examined how framing with serious or non-serious first study, 44 graduate students played same word association game that was either as study activity. Results showed increased recall compared gaming context. second involving 87 participants playing game, results prior experience also reduced recall. Overall, grouped analysis led poorer than recognition measures, even when considering knowledge, behavior, experience. Theoretical practical implications educators are discussed.
