Reducing the current level of meat consumption would reap significant environmental benefits. However, a consumer transition towards more plant-rich eating is lagging, and social sciences have had limited success in understanding behavioural change this area. Here, we advocate research agenda focussing on role networks could play encouraging consumers to eat less meat. A fundamental step to foster a sustainable future is enhancing students’ awareness of responsible food consumption. The present research study assessed waste (FW) issues, attitudes towards school catering and lunch management, the reasons for plate (PW) in Rezekne city schools, Latvia. survey was conducted April 2024 involving 944 students grades 2 7 across four selected schools (S1, S2, S3, S4), provided with state municipality-funded free lunches. Statistical analysis methods (Mean ± SD, Kruskal–Wallis H test, Mann–Whitney U post hoc Spearman’s correlation analysis) were used analyze results. findings revealed limited knowledge about FW generally indifferent attitude meals. In addition, significant dissatisfaction sensory qualities meals observed, yet satisfaction did not correlate levels, pointing broader issues within model. restrictive pre-served portion system found ineffective reducing fostering model should empower independently choose type quantity food, combining their abilities motivation practical actions. In contemporary markets and societal norms, critical ecosystem services for a sustainable future are often externalised. ‘Societal levers' legal, market, social mechanisms shape resource managers' behavior expectations, institutionalising evolving values. Using the STEEP framework (social, technological, economic, environmental, political), we analyse how emerging concerns become shared transform into levers, reshaping norms. Abstract Despite emerging consumer trends and policies promoting sustainable food consumption, the transition towards societal tipping points for systems remains protracted due to multifaceted challenges such as misconceptions, value chain inequalities, policy fragmentation. Addressing these requires a comprehensive approach that considers all actors within system. The present paper follows paradigm set by Consumers’ Understanding of Eating Sustainably (CUES) Horizon Europe project introduces CUES’ Triple Change strategy.
