Introduction The digital economy is reshaping economic structures and resource flows, but its role in enhancing allocation efficiency within the framework of green development has not yet been fully explored. Methods This paper analyzes panel data from 257 Chinese cities to investigate how influences regional efficiency, with a focus on mediating innovation. Results results show that significantly improves nonlinear effects characterized by increasing marginal returns. Mechanism tests reveal optimizes fostering Heterogeneity analysis indicates eastern regions areas strong environmental regulations, promotes both substantive strategic innovations, leading higher efficiency. In mid-western regions, only innovation significant effect, while weak regulations experience less pronounced impacts. Discussion study offers insights into leveraging achieve efficient strengthen resilience era.

The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) has been implemented for over a decade; however, research on its impact China’s transport sector remains relatively scarce. It is imperative to investigate whether the BRI greatly enhanced growth of Green Total Factor Productivity (GTFP) in across provinces along route because logistics hub crucial sustainable land development local economy. To address this missing link, study examined GTFP cities by employing global Luenberger nonradial directional distance function (GLNDDF). Subsequently, Difference-in-Differences (DID) model was applied evaluate policy regional sector. key results were as follows: (1) our empirical findings indicated that statistically significant, yet very weak governance transportation sector, with an average increase 0.0265 units total factor productivity, implying direction seems right, but much stronger needed differentiated city planning; (2) two wings implementation policies regulatory promotional policies. In study, active environmental regulation may have more substantial than policies, oversupply issues arising from financial promotions routes should be avoided planning, even political importance. (3) There are notable variations, effect being central region, grand industrial transition east coastal western region cautiously harmonized between market demand infrastructure-oriented government-led These provide valuable insights into urban environments, urban–rural interactions, emphasizing importance land-related tradeoffs resource management foster developing countries.
