Abstract Depressive disorders and suicidal behaviors represent major causes of health loss. Modifications brain microvasculature, specifically alterations the blood–brain barrier have been supposed to participate in vulnerability those along with cognitive impairment, especially older adults. In this article, we addressed evidence linking impairments mood suicide. Secondly, investigated their relationship depression old age, neurodegenerative processes. Particular attention was drawn toward potential interactions between coagulation processes dysfunctions, as innovative treatment strategies may emerge from research fields. Overall, studies reviewed highlight implication multiple dysfunctions Impairments show relationships altered expression endothelial cell junction proteins. These modifications also implicate receptors extracellular matrix, vascular growth factor, changes perivascular astrocytes, has links local systemic inflammatory Dysfunctions underly chronic stress psychiatric diathesis age. addition, outline that are likely interact further contribute disorders. conclusion, new pathophysiological models offer perspectives detecting biomarkers parallel, these open avenues for developing therapeutic agents, although considering risks eventual benefits is needed.
