Health by design; optimising our urban environmental microbiomes for human health

Humans have evolved in direct and intimate contact with their environment the microbes that it contains, over a period of 2 million years. As result, human physiology has become intrinsically linked to environmental microbiota. Urbanisation reduced our exposure harmful pathogens, however there is now increasing evidence these same health-protective improvements may also be contributing hidden disease burden: immune dysregulation. Thoughtful purposeful design potential ameliorate health concerns by providing sources microbial diversity for exposure. In this narrative review, we highlight role microbiota provide insights into how can optimise through well-designed cities, urban landscapes buildings.
