The purpose of this paper is to comprehensively review the research progress nattokinase in lowering blood lipid, including its source, structure and physicochemical properties, mechanisms functions, clinical status, safety considerations, so as provide reference for further on application treatment dyslipidemia. Natto a traditional Japanese fermented food, which made from soybeans by Bacillus natto. During fermentation process, natto will produce variety biologically active substances, nattokinase. Nattokinase (NK) serine protease with stable enzyme activity good freeze–thaw tolerance, exerts lipid-lowering anti-atherosclerotic effects activating hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL), inhibiting hydroxymethylglutaryl monoacyl coenzyme A reductase (HMG-CoA reductase), enhancing lipoprotein (LPL) activity. Large-scale trials have confirmed that significantly improves lipid profile reduces atherosclerotic plaque area intima-media thickness favorable profile. Compared drugs (e.g., statins fibrates), has multifaceted mechanism lower risk side effects, makes it suitable patients intolerant drugs; when combined natural products such statins, fibrates, red yeast, lifestyle interventions, can play synergistic role reduce cardiovascular disease.
