Abstract A recurring hypothesis in the literature is that “passive” social media use (browsing) leads to negative effects on well-being. This preregistered study investigated a rival hypothesis, which states of browsing well-being depend person-specific susceptibilities envy, inspiration, and enjoyment. We conducted three-week experience sampling among 353 adolescents (13–15 years, 126 assessments per adolescent). Using an advanced N = 1 method analysis, we found sizeable heterogeneity associations with enjoyment (e.g., for envy ranging from β −.44 +.71). The Passive Social Media Use Hypothesis was confirmed 20% rejected 80%. More browsing-induced experienced affective (25%) than no (13%). Conversely, more positive (47%) (9%).

Abstract What type of emotional language spreads further in political discourses on social media? Previous research has focused situations that primarily elicited negative emotions, showing tended to spread further. Global COVID-19 lockdowns have disrupted adolescents' in-person social networks, increasing likelihood of loneliness. Social media can help adolescents maintain and develop peer relationships across distance. In this short longitudinal study with 735 Peruvian (ages: 11-17) from low-to-middle-income urban settings, we investigated whether online experiences relate to loneliness during initial stages lockdown. Loneliness remained constant between week 6 11 lockdown, was higher for females similar school-grades. Positive negative were more frequent older students, experienced than males. Greater positive related lower loneliness, the reverse pattern experiences. Our results suggest that may mitigate physical isolation.

Dancing is a universal human activity, and also domain of enduring significance in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research. However, there has been limited investigation into how computing supports the experiences recreational dancers. Concurrently, diverse sizeable dance community emerging VRChat. Little known about these dancers’ experiences, motivations, practices. Yet shedding light could inform both VR technology development design systems that better support embodied complex social interactions. To bridge this gap, we interviewed participants active VRChat scene. Through thematic analysis, identified six central facets their related to freedom, community, as an individual experience, shared performance, self-expression -exploration. Based on findings, discuss tensions highlight beneficial impacts dancing well problems still await resolving.

Abstract: Research into the effects of social media on well-being often distinguishes “active” and “passive” use, with passive use supposedly more harmful to (i.e., hypothesis). Recently, several studies reviews have begun question this hypothesis its conceptual basis, active/passive dichotomy. As dichotomy has become a staple research but evidence challenging validity is mounting, comprehensive debate pros, cons, potential future needed. This adversarial review brings together two voices – one supportive, other critical toward model. In constructive dialogue, we summarize contrast our opposing positions: The first position argues that useful framework because it adequately describes how why (more) for well-being. second challenges specifically. Globally, depression and anxiety are major public health concerns with onset during adolescence. While rural Australia experiences overall lower outcomes, variation in mental prevalence rates between urban is unclear. The aim of this paper was to estimate the pooled for among young Australians aged 10 24 years. Selected studies from a systematic literature search were assessed risk bias. Random effects model using DerSimonian Laird method Freeman–Tukey Double Arcsine Transformation fitted. Sensitivity analyses performed.
