Creative thinking involves the evaluation of one's ideas in order to select best one, but cognitive and neural mechanisms underlying this remain unclear. Using a combination creativity rating tasks, study demonstrates that individuals attribute subjective values their ideas, as relative balance originality adequacy. Is the role of our sensory systems to represent physical world as accurately possible? If so, are preferences and emotions, often deemed irrational, decoupled from these 'ground-truth' experiences? We show why answer both questions is 'no'. Brain function metabolically costly, brain loses some fraction information that it encodes transmits. Therefore, if brains maximize objective functions increase fitness their species, they should adapt objective-maximizing rules environment at earliest stages processing. Consequently, observed 'irrationalities', preferences, emotions stem necessity for early process while considering metabolic costs internal states organism.

Anhedonia is a reduction in enjoyment, motivation, or interest. It common across mental health disorders and harbinger of poor treatment outcomes. The enjoyment aspect, termed 'consummatory anhedonia', particular poses fundamental questions about how the brain constructs rewards: what processes determine intensely reward experienced? Here, we outline limitations existing computational conceptualisations consummatory anhedonia. We then suggest richer reinforcement learning (RL) account anhedonia with reconceptualisation subjective hedonic experience terms goal progress. Difficult decisions typically involve mental effort, which scales with the deployment of cognitive (e.g., mnesic, attentional) resources engaged in processing decision-relevant information. But how does brain regulate effort? A possibility is that optimizes a resource allocation problem, whereby amount invested balances its expected cost (i.e. effort) and benefit. Our working assumption subjective decision confidence serves as benefit term hence "metacognitive" nature control. Here, we present computational model for online metacognitive control or oMCD. Formally, oMCD Markov Decision Process optimally solves ensuing problem under agnostic assumptions about inner workings underlying system. We demonstrate this makes quasi-optimal policy broad class processes, including -but not limited to- progressive attribute integration. disclose oMCD's main properties (in terms choice, response time), show they reproduce most established empirical results field value-based making. Finally, discuss possible connections between prominent neurocognitive theories effort regulation.

Satisfying a variety of conflicting needs in changing environment is fundamental challenge for any adaptive agent. Here, we show that designing an agent modular fashion as collection subagents, each dedicated to separate need, powerfully enhanced the agent’s capacity satisfy its overall needs. We used formalism deep reinforcement learning investigate biologically relevant multiobjective task: continually maintaining homeostasis set physiologic variables. then conducted simulations environments and compared how agents performed relative standard monolithic (i.e., aimed all integrated manner using single aggregate measure success). Simulations revealed a) exhibited form exploration was intrinsic emergent rather than extrinsically imposed; b) were robust changes nonstationary environments, c) scaled gracefully their ability maintain number objectives increased. Supporting analysis suggested robustness increasing numbers due efficiency representation afforded by architecture. These results suggest normative principles which have adapted complex may also explain why humans long been described consisting “multiple selves.”
