Interoceptive Processing in Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs) are characterized by chronic symptoms in the absence of overt pathology and affect a significant percentage worldwide population. They commonly accompanied co-morbid psychiatric symptomatology associated with suffering great healthcare services utilization. There is growing evidence that dysregulation gut–brain axis disturbances processing afferent interoceptive signals lie at heart these disorders. In this context, aim current review was to detect critically original articles focusing on role interoception pathophysiology FGIDs. Our search yielded 38 relevant studies. FGID patients displayed increased visceral sensitivity, enhanced attention cues, greater emotional arousal when coping gut-derived sensations.
