Abstract Background Evolutionary tradeoffs between life-history strategies are important in animal evolution. Because microbes can influence multiple aspects of host physiology, including growth rate and susceptibility to disease or stress, changes animal-microbial symbioses have the potential mediate tradeoffs. Scleractinian corals provide a biodiverse, data-rich, ecologically-relevant system explore this idea. Results Using comparative approach, we tested if coral microbiomes correlate with across 425 million years evolution by conducting cross-species microbiome survey (the “Global Coral Microbiome Project”) combining results long-term global prevalence trait data. Interpreting these data their phylogenetic context, show that microbial dominance predicts susceptibility, traced dominance-disease association single putatively beneficial symbiont genus, Endozoicomonas. Endozoicomonas relative abundance tissue explained 30% variation 60% 40 genera, while also correlating strongly high rates. Corals associate with a diverse community of prokaryotic symbionts that provide nutrition, antioxidants and other protective compounds to their host. However, the influence microbes on coral thermotolerance remains understudied. Here, we examined microbial communities associated colonies Acropora cf. tenuis exhibit high or low upon exposure 33°C (heated) relative 29°C (control). Using 16S rRNA sequencing, show structure all A. was similar each at control temperature. Thermotolerant colonies, however, had relatively greater abundance Endozoicomonas, Arcobacter, Bifidobacterium Lactobacillus. At elevated temperature, only thermosensitive showed distinct shift in microbiome, an increase Flavobacteriales, Rhodobacteraceae Vibrio, accompanying marked bleaching response. Functional prediction indicated thermotolerant corals were enriched for genes related metabolism, while microbiomes cell motility antibiotic compound synthesis. These differences may contribute variable performance under thermal stress. Endozoicomonas lisbonensis sp. nov., a novel marine bacterium isolated from the soft coral Litophyton sp. at Oceanário de Lisboa in Portugal DOI

This study describes a Gram-stain-negative, rod-shaped, facultatively anaerobic bacterial species isolated from the octocoral Litophyton sp. inhabiting live coral aquarium at Oceanário de Lisboa in Portugal. Four strains, NE35, NE40T, NE41 and NE43, were classified into genus Endozoicomonas by means of 16S rRNA gene whole-genome sequence homologies. We then performed phylogenetic, phylogenomic biochemical analyses to examine their novel status within genus, based on comparisons with designated type strain NE40T. The closest relatives NE40T are montiporae CL-33T (98.2%), euniceicola EF212T (97.6%) gorgoniicola PS125T (97.2%). four strains show genome-wide average nucleotide identity scores above level cut-off (95%) one another below all publicly available genomes. Digital DNA-DNA hybridization further supported classification as species, showing values 70% when compared other strains. DNA G+C content was 49.0 mol%, its genome size 5.45 Mb. Strain grows 15 37 °C, 1-5% (w/v) NaCl, between pH 6.0 8.0 marine broth shows optimal growth 28-32 2-3% NaCl 7.0-8.0. predominant cellular fatty acids summed feature 3 (C16 : 1 ω6c and/or C16 ω7c), 8 (C18 C18 :0 C14 :0. presents oxidase, catalase β-galactosidase activities can reduce nitrates nitrites degrade cellulose, chitin, agarose xylan. Based polyphasic approach employed this study, we propose name lisbonensis nov. (type NE40T=DSM 118084T=UCCCB 212T).

Abstract Background Endozoicomonas is a widely distributed genus of marine bacteria, associated with various organisms, and recognized for its ecological importance in host health, nutrient cycling, disease dynamics. Despite significance, genomic features remain poorly characterized due to limited availability high-quality genome assemblies. Results In this study, we sequenced 5 novel strains re-sequenced 1 known strain improve resolution. By integrating these 6 genomes 31 others that were publicly available, identified distinct, coral-associated clade not by the previous two-clade classification. Pan-genomic analysis revealed significant variation genetic trait distribution among clades. Notably, lacks quorum sensing capabilities, suggesting resistance quenching mechanisms.
