This study explores how gender influences risk perception and tourist destination choice by examining the academic literature from Web of Science Scopus databases spanning 1995 to 2022. Through bibliometric methods, this research uncovers patterns, leading themes, gaps in integrating within tourism studies, especially during periods heightened global awareness. Using analysis, with keywords, citations, author networks relevant publications, co-authorship co-citation analyses were used identify key contributors thematic clusters. Data visualization through VOSviewer SCIMAT provided insights into relational trends, while alternative metrics offered a broader perspective on dissemination relevance. Results indicate that is gradually being incorporated but remains less central than tourism. Research area tends increase response crises, such as COVID–19 pandemic. examines English language publications Scopus, potentially limiting generalizability findings non-Western contexts. Purpose This study aims to empower cruise academia assert their role as enablers, and potentially drivers, of sustainable, responsible resilient futures. Design/methodology/approach contribution represents a synthesis critical reflection cruise-related research-review literature over the last four decades, assessing its impact potential in terms influencing evolution future developments tourism. Findings Cruise research between 1980s first decade this century could be characterised “ship-centric” managerially focused.
