Abstract Household travel surveys collect core datasets for modelling passenger demand. However, decline in survey completion rate is becoming a concern recent years. One major cause the transition from computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) to web (CAWI) surveys, where respondents need self-complete without any active help an interviewer. Among all components, diaries are most challenging part of CAWI and suffer significant dropouts participation. Therefore, investigation necessary understand implications such participation CAWI-based household on data quality. This study reports two diary designs developed ease response burdens surveys. Empirical investigations conducted drop-off behaviour while filling out diaries. In proxy with stable repetitions outperform sophisticated designs. deployed supposedly advanced designs, higher demand more likely drop out. Estimated using generalizable analysis framework proposed by this study, reflected final dataset collected design might be underestimated 10.2%. also proposes strategies recommendations future
