Investigating dialogic interaction in K12 online one-on-one mathematics tutoring using AI and sequence mining techniques

Abstract
Online
one-on-one
tutoring
serves
as
a
supplementary
approach
to
traditional
classroom
instruction.
It
has
been
shown
enhance
personalized
learning
and
academic
performance.
However,
the
dynamics
of
dialogic
interactions
within
this
educational
setting
are
not
fully
understood.
Thus,
we
present
computational
analysis
in
online
mathematics
tutoring.
Specifically,
devised
coding
scheme
tailored
sessions
leveraged
advanced
artificial
intelligence
techniques
construct
an
automated
model
for
annotating
dialog
acts.
We
then
investigated
basic
characteristics
interaction
patterns
dataset
encompassing
dialogs
K-12
education
obtained
insightful
findings.
First,
tutors
were
found
often
apply
both
didactic
other
effective
teaching
strategies.
Second,
off-task
chatting
accounted
significant
proportion
sessions.
Third,
high
school
students
exhibited
greater
engagement
cognitive
abilities
than
primary
middle
through
their
more
active
participation
superior
reasoning
skills.
Primary
students,
despite
less
participation,
responded
positively
when
engaged
by
tutors.

findings

Abstract
In
recent
decades,
under
the
influence
of
technological
advancements,
evolving
student
demographics,
and
shifting
societal
demands,
landscape
higher
education
has
undergone
significant
transformations.
Among
numerous
learning
approaches,
Flipped
Learning
(FL)
gained
particular
prominence
due
to
its
ability
enhance
students’
performance
through
active
engagement
self-directed
learning.
Another
teaching
linked
indicators
academic
achievements
is
Peer-Assisted
(PAL).
However,
previous
research
on
PAL
remains
scarce.
To
fill
this
gap
in
literature,
effects
integration
Peer
Counseling
(PC)
activity
into
both
personal
development
within
flipped
classroom
setting
over
time

investigated

students

91),

PAL-integrated
