Abstract Transformative capacity (TC) is key for addressing climate change impacts. It refers to urban areas’ ability profound and intentional address current challenges move towards a more desirable resilient state. However, its varied applications across disciplines can lead misunderstandings implementation challenges. Thus, this Semi-Systematic Literature Review (SSLR) on TC within studies from 2016 2022 aims overview synthesise literature gaps inform ongoing debates, intersecting it with climate-related research. The results show an increasing interest in two fields of knowledge: resilience transformative review found as catalyst actions, promoting sustainable pathways, enhancing resilience, driving fundamental changes adaptation. Finally, the prevailing concern concept’s fragmentation, excessive research governance features, lack joint about innovation.

Nature-based solutions are gaining prominence in urban sustainability discourses, especially climate adaptation, efforts to increase resilience, and as a means of promoting range social, environmental, economic benefits. There however barriers inertia that slow the adoption such solutions, term commonly used for overcoming factors is mainstreaming. The mainstreaming relation nature-based ambiguous, it entangled within or conflated with other similar concepts also describe change processes. This lack clarity cause potential misdirection planning towards more resilient cities. Therefore, this article expands deepens understanding cities by proposing (re)conceptualisation Our explores context multi-level governance, unpack where can unfold across levels, focuses on knowledge drivers, how activities shaped. These dimensions important unpacking happen what informs activities, facilitating effective policy-making, wider solutions. We report systematic literature review synthesis 147 articles, which proposes new framework definition identifying five mechanisms four roles explain processes mobilise adds language academic policy debate needed operationalising processes, thereby transform practices.

Mainstreaming nature-based solutions in cities has grown scale and magnitude recent times but is still considered to be the main challenge for transitioning our their communities more climate resilient liveable: environmentally, economically, socially.Furthermore, taking next level, scaling them out all urban contexts achieve a greater impact, proving slow often conflicts with other initiatives such as energy generation, mobility transport initiatives, infilling combat sprawl. So, task neither easy nor straightforward; there are many barriers this novel transition, especially when it comes collaborative approaches implementing diverse within city authorities themselves. This paper reports on new process that systematically co-produced captured framework planning emerged during Connecting Nature project. The Framework three-stage, iterative involves seven key activity areas mainstreaming solutions: technical solutions, governance, financing business models, enterprises, co-production, reflexive monitoring, impact assessment. The tested applied designed address overcome implementation of via co-created, iterative, reflective approach. The guided by proposed already yielded promising results some project, though further usage its adoption needed explore potential different Global South. The concludes suggestions how may realised.

Abstract Purpose of Review In tandem with China’s rapid urbanisation and economic growth, some negative impacts on the eco-environment human wellbeing have arisen, such as urban heat island effect, air pollution lack recreational spaces. To address degradation improve residents’ quality life simultaneously, central government launched National Forest City action in 2004, which essentially promotes forests nature-based solutions (UF-NBS) contributes to achieving sustainable development goals. Whilst this key national has been implemented for about two decades, it received limited scholarly attention within beyond China. This paper is very first summarise comprehensively action, focusing its rationale, evaluation management. Recent Findings By establishing cost-effective various environmental social issues, integrates novel knowledge best practices accumulated Europe North America into traditional ideology, pertinent human-nature relationship landscape design, further adapts renovates these country’s unique socioeconomic context. It highlights multi-functionality underpinned by a set performance indicators covering both qualitative quantitative aspects City’s planning, construction, management review. Additionally, reflects dynamic interaction science-policy-practice continuum hinged field experiments, transfer, public engagement, policy agenda greening actions. Challenges, unbalanced geographical distribution KPIs ecological integrity functionality forests, should be addressed refining scaling-up action. Summary UF-NBS pathway urbanisation, serving demonstrative exemplar other developing developed countries that may wish avoid their dependence pathways. sheds light how implement effective NBS addresses global societal challenges.

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are implemented across multiple cities worldwide and feature as promising in local global agendas. As that can deal with interlinked urban challenges, NBS being taken up by different geographies considered to be mainstreaming. The process, referred mainstreaming, how this achieved needs better understood, which is identified a research gap. In paper, we examine the roles actors undertake contribute mainstreaming of cities. aim understand actors, especially those within governments, assume process mobilise implement novel innovative strategic for This topic explored case study metropolitan Melbourne region Australia, where forest strategies gaining traction governments addressing resilience concerns. As experimentation with niche innovations confronts the old new, intermediaries are important to bridge innovative niches and established regimes. While there is a broad literature on foster urban sustainability transitions, limited understanding of acting as facilitators translators. Previous studies transition in adopt scaling-centric focus, which rests assumption that novelty emerges within impacts regimes through processes scaling-up. By contrast, this study shifts towards reconfiguration perspective move beyond niche-regime dichotomy provide more fine-grained conception how in-between regimes, well within-regime dynamics. This build dialogue between transitions. It shed light ambigious heterogenous nature regime actors: they do not only reproduce path dependencies, but can also facilitate creation. implies shift from meso-towards micro-level analysis, reveals variety their interactions.
