ABSTRACT All river networks are virtually prone to drying, which is dramatically increasing in space and time. This threatens the functions ecosystem services (ES) rivers provide societies. Here, we introduce a new conceptual model of provision ES drying (DRN), situating as pivotal element every network. Based on meta‐ecosystem perspective, contend that determined DRN by exchange abiotic biotic flows between terrestrial aquatic ecosystems catchment. Specifically, highlight three main components involved: intensity flows, biodiversity patterns, functioning rates. How they vary time due changes hydrological connectivity catchment‐DRN determines pattern along DRN. Although events cause great diversity naturally provided DRN, must perceive their anthropogenic increase major socio‐ecological risk factor.

The proliferation of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) in the Chongón Reservoir, located within Parque Lago National Recreation Area Guayaquil, Ecuador, poses significant challenges to local aquatic ecosystem and resource management. This study assesses impact coverage on evapotranspiration rates over a 20-year period from 2002 2022 using remote sensing data geospatial analysis. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), derived Landsat satellite imagery, along with meteorological records, was utilized model spatial temporal dynamics its effects evapotranspiration. Our results indicate that fluctuates significantly between rainy dry seasons, increasing covering 10.42% reservoir area peak 42.33% 2017 during seasons. A strong positive correlation (r=0.92, p<0.001) found net daily loss due associated were higher season (mean 2309.90 mm/year) compared 1917.87 mm/year). These elevated contribute increased reservoir, potentially impacting availability for municipal agricultural use. Controlling spread is therefore crucial preserving reservoir’s ecological integrity ensuring sustainable findings this provide valuable insights informing management strategies aimed at mitigating invasive species freshwater resources maintaining health.

Abstract. In Italy, a complete and updated database including the most relevant structural information regarding reservoirs characteristics of their upstream watersheds is currently missing. This paper tackles this gap by presenting first comprehensive dataset 528 large dams in Italy. Alongside details dams, such as coordinates, reservoir surface area volume, also encompasses range geomorphological, climatological, extreme rainfall, land cover soil-related attributes catchments. The data used to create are partially sourced from General Department Dams Hydro-Electrical Infrastructures well processing standardized grid data. These include DEM Shuttle Radar Topography Mission, national-scale monthly maps hydrological budget components, vegetation index Copernicus Land Monitoring Service high-resolution soil particle size fractions. (Evangelista et al., 2024a; https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.12818297), which contains not easily available other similar global or national collections, expected be great help for broad spectrum applications, particularly those related floods.

The Geheyan Reservoir, located on the Qingjiang River, a tributary of Yangtze is important for regional water supplies and ecological conservation. Understanding changes in ecosystem structure function has become critical assessing efficacy after implementation fishing ban. This study employs Ecopath model to examine characteristics Reservoir before (2017) (2022) results show significant differences trophic levels, energy transfer efficiency, maturity between two periods. levels increased from 3.36 pre-fishing ban 3.89 post-ban, indicating an enhanced complexity food web structure. highest eco-trophic efficiency major commercial fish species ban, improved utilization efficiency. However, bottlenecks were still observed II IV, suggesting ongoing challenges nutrient cycling. total primary production-to-total respiration ratio (6.93) connectivity index (0.25) indicate that ecosystem’s stability have These findings underscore ban’s effectiveness provide scientific foundation sustainable management similar ecosystems River Basin.

The enormous biodiversity of tropical freshwater combined with a considerable increase in the construction reservoirs urges to understand ecological effects caused by damming. Using rarely available data obtained before (one year) and after (four years) filling hydroelectric plant on Teles Pires River (Amazon basin), abundance, biomass, diversity fish assemblage were evaluated using two complementary approaches: BACI (before-after-control-impact) design mixed models analyses covariance. Significant Before-After × Control-Impact interactions species richness observed, decreases abundance more stable biomass filling. Some abundant species, such as Jupiaba polylepis, acanthogaster, Knodus cf. heteresthes, Moenkhausia lepidura among others, declined or disappeared from impact sites. However, temporal particularly spatial variation independent damming explained all response variables analyzed, including composition, covariance demonstrated general negative trends irrespective This study illustrates usefulness designs assess but also that other statistical approaches are complementary, given difficulty identifying control sites short length most time series. results suggest preserving tributaries upstream natural regimes environmental might help mitigate impacts ecosystems.
