Soil erosion is both a major driver and consequence of land degradation with significant on-site off-site costs which are critical to understand quantify. One cost soil originates from the sediments delivered aquatic systems (e.g., rivers, lakes, seas), may generate broad array environmental economic impacts. As part EU Observatory (EUSO) working group on erosion, we provide comprehensive assessment existing sediment removal European Union (EU) catchments due water erosion. These quantifications combine continental average regionally explicit accumulation rates published remediation costs, integrating numerous figures reported in grey literature. The removing an estimated 135 million m3 accumulated only likely exceeding 2.3 billion euro (€) annually UK, large regional differences between countries. Considering through all loss processes (gullies, landslides, quarrying, among others) extrapolating measured reservoir capacity losses, circa 5000 reservoirs exceeds 1 potential ranging 5 8 € annually. estimates, although not accounting for already implemented catchment mitigation measures, insights into one at scale as well burden. provided estimates contribute support policies such Monitoring Law, Zero Pollution Action Plan, Farm Fork strategy Water Framework Directive.

This study aims to analyze the development trend of municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment in China from 2011 2020, and provide insights into challenges opportunities sustainable MSW management. Our analysis shows that generation declined which could be attributed a combination factors, including low urban population growth rate, implementation garbage classification policy, impact COVID-19 pandemic. We also found shift landfill incineration is expected increase significantly coming years, although there are still several structural problems, such as an imbalance capacity among regions cities, uncertainty about whether can meet overall demand due high volume generation. highlights heavy dependence on government investment for mode change, difficult expanding deficit between fiscal revenue expenditure local governments. Correlation coefficient significant positive correlation proportion sanitation investment, negative investment. To address these challenges, we propose technological advancement management optimization reduce cost treatment, well expansion channels through green funds, taxation relief, other means promote high-quality industry. These changes accelerate transformation China's industry policy promotion-dependent market-oriented operation.

Dredging is essential for maintaining navigable waters in ports, rivers, and dams, but it faces environmental scrutiny as the push industrial circularity intensifies. The management of dredged materials (DMs) presents a unique challenge opportunity, especially Morocco, where there notable gap research application. This paper conducts two-pronged exploration: critically assesses Morocco's legislative environment concerning DMs, highlighting its strengths shortcomings, evaluates potential DMs civil engineering projects, illustrating their alignment with 11 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. Central to this stakeholder survey that sheds light on perceived benefits, obstacles, socio-political hindrances DM adoption construction sector. In exploration DMs' advantageous applications, identified key challenges utilization management. Market entry DM-derived products impeded by absence standardized safety regulations. Additionally, transportation costs represent substantial practical hurdle leverage beneficially. Nonetheless, exists discernible willingness among end users adopt containing within operations, despite prevalent lack awareness regarding intrinsic benefits properties DMs. Collectively, study not only vivid snapshot Morocco also charts pathway researchers, policymakers, industry stakeholders collaboratively champion sustainable circular economy practices dredging

Abstract Eutrophication of fresh waterbodies is a global phenomenon that exacerbated by increases in agricultural activities, industrialization, and urbanization, all driven the increase human population. This paper reviews state inland South Africa, identifying major drivers eutrophication discussing how different sectors economy are negatively impacted eutrophication. Data indicate up to 76% water impoundments approximately 70% river systems eutrophic hypereutrophic experience protracted periods cyanobacterial blooms, particularly summer months. Negative impacts on sector, potable supply tourism well documented becoming more explicit. Evidently, nutrient loading patterns into bodies have changed become complex. Although wastewater treatment plants remain contributors loads most waterbodies, non-point sources including runoff, untreated sewage from leaking overflowing sewer systems, as runoff informal settlements, also make substantial contributions. As result, strategies employed prevent eutrophication, within-waterbody remediation programs fallen short reducing trophic status thus ameliorating symptoms Tailor-made, integrated management initiatives target point source, internal are, therefore, required.

Large quantities of dredged sediments and recycled concrete materials are generated every year all over the world. The disposal these large in landfills represents serious environmental problems. Furthermore, high-quality raw for construction depleting, their use cannot be sustained. valorization as alternative has potential to reduce impact two issues. In this context, study aims at investigating feasibility using aggregates material road subgrade construction. Various mix designs were prepared aggregates. mixes then treated with quicklime binder specified French soil treatment guide. Their physical, mechanical, geotechnical properties confirmed up a certain percentage Moreover, they showed that containing 20% met minimum physical mechanical properties, such immediate bearing capacity, unconfined compression strength, indirect tensile strength greater, UCSI/UCS60 ratio. Finally, leaching tests conducted ensure safety various mixes. results thresholds foundations base layers will studied future projects.

An unprecedented rate of construction has profoundly increased the risk scarcity natural resources and threatened ecosystem sustainability. To establish an effective sustainable development policy, it is imperative to promote use responsible production channels, including waste recycling. Reuse harbor dredged sediment commonly investigated as a valuable alternative non-renewable needed for construction. Sediment characterization decisive in valorization process, aiming identify potential recycling paths. Existing research efforts, however, have rarely case studies developing countries. Moreover, they tended focus on technical aspects, ignoring economic feasibility, which carries important implications. This paper fills this gap first by meticulously selecting laboratory tests within means available countries second conducting cost-benefit analysis. The port Safi, Morocco, was chosen implementation adopted approach. Results showed that sand readily reusable aggregate. Several applications are possible, most interesting one being concrete works, substitute conventional sand. While treatment washing dehydrating proved necessary, analysis confirmed profitability Hence, beneficial reuse material technically economically feasible.

Several metals and metalloids (e.g., As, Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn) are toxic at low concentrations, thus their presence in sediments can raise environmental concern. However, these elements be of economic interest, several techniques have been used for recovery some them widely applied to mining or industrial soils, but not sediments. In this work, wet high-intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS) was Pb Zn from polluted A composite sample 50 kg taken the Avilés estuary (Asturias, North Spain) with element concentrations above legislation limits. Element distribution assessed using wet-sieving ICP-MS analysis, revealing that 125-500 μm grain-size fraction accounts 62 w% material concentration is lower than other grain size fractions. Subsequently, WHIMS three different voltage intensities <125 fractions, excellent ratios, especially coarser material. Furthermore, property measurements coupled microscopy analysis revealed success technique derives concentrating metal-enriched iron oxides particles (ferro- para-magnetic material) a mixture quartz minerals (diamagnetic particles). These results indicate feasibility metal metalloid sediments, offer double benefit coastal area restoration valuable context circular economy.
