Metropolitan areas increasingly confront complex challenges related to food security, social inequality, environmental degradation, and resource scarcity, exacerbated by rapid urbanization, climate change, the reliance on extended, fragile supply chains. Urban peri-urban agriculture (UPA) is recognized as a promising approach mitigate these issues. For example, it enhances security nutrition strengthening local systems, improves livelihoods providing employment income for residents, promotes sustainability through creation of greening spaces reduction miles. However, full potential UPA remains constrained various technological, economic, barriers, such limited growing spaces, lack land tenure low economic efficiency, insufficient public awareness acceptance. Given that technological innovations are critical in overcoming barriers maximizing positive impacts UPA, this review provides state-of-the-art overview advanced technologies tools applicable aiming inform how can be better enabled enhance UPA’s contributions sustainable urban systems. The begins defining categorizing its forms, exploring multifunctional roles within contexts. It then presents thorough analysis range serve specific purposes, including productivity product quality improvement, space utilization optimization, recycling, use management. Furthermore, evaluates current faced throughout stages research development (R&D), dissemination extension, application commercialization, employing an analytical framework adapted from Technology Life Cycle theories. In conclusion, emphasizes crucial relevant play transforming systems environments. proposes four key recommendations: (1) enhancing funding mechanisms fostering interdisciplinary collaboration R&D, (2) technology (3) promoting feasibility market integration business models, (4) establishing supportive environments among all stakeholders innovation process.
