The novel partial denitrification-driven anammox (PD/A) is an energy-efficient method for nitrogen removal from wastewater. However, its stability and efficiency are impeded by the competition between heterotrophic denitrifying bacteria relatively slow-growing bacteria. In this study, a PD/A granular sludge system was developed, which achieved of 94% with 98% contribution, even as temperature dropped to 9.6 °C. Analysis bacterial activity in aggregates different sizes revealed that largest granules (>2.0 mm) exhibited highest activity, 2.8 times flocs (<0.2 mm), while showed significantly higher nitrite production rates PD, more than six granules. Interestingly, fluorescent situ hybridization (FISH) combined confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) nest-shaped structure Thauera genus, key contributor highly enriched at outer edge, providing substrate inside As decreased, transformed into small efficiently retain This study provides multidimensional insights spatiotemporal assembly immigration autotrophic stable high-rate removal.
